The Movie:

I didn't know what to expect with "The Big Tease", but I wound up being highly entertained by the film. It's nothing more than a light comedy and it knows it; the joy of the film though, lies not in the concept(mock-documentary), but the hilarity of the oddball subject - a hairdressing competition in Los Angeles.

Crawford Mackenzie(the Drew Carey show's Craig Ferguson) is the most widely known hairdresser in Scotland, is followed by a British documentary crew as he heads to Los Angeles to enter the competition. Things don't go quite as well as he'd hoped, and he finds himself trying to get into the competition rather than competing in it.

Ferguson comes from sitcom stardom into another sitcom for "The Big Tease". The film is predictable, light and sometimes drags a little bit between laughs. But in the lead role, Ferguson is energetic and willing to do anything for a laugh. The film could have taken the absurd subject further, and gotten more laughs from the subject, though. Performances are generally good, with Larry Miller as a hotel manager, and Francis Fisher as an agent that Ferguson wows to get into the competition. There's even a funny cameo performance from fellow "Drew Carey" castmate, Carey himself.

"The Big Tease" marches joyfully from joke to joke; some work quite well, some fall flat, but there are certainly a couple of big laughs on occasion. The performances do well with the material, and although it could have been better, it also could have definitely been worse.

The DVD

VIDEO: Warner's transfer of "The Big Tease" does as well as it can with a movie that's not always particularly great looking visually. The film has sort of a soft, sometimes slightly hazy look to it (mainly during some of the outdoor scenes), and sharpness is varied. Some shots look sharp and enjoyable, some look a little lacking in clarity. Colors are varied too; most scenes offer fairly natural and solid colors, while in a couple of scenes they look slightly pale. Flesh tones are mostly natural, as well.

Problems are not with pixelation or shimmering; neither show up during this presentation. Aside from the softness, the main flaw is the occasional minor print flaw. A few minor scratches are all that's included in that catagory, and they aren't too distracting. The widescreen side contains a 1.85:1 anamorphic transfer, while there is a full-frame edition on the opposite side. Warner Brothers has made an appealing presentation.

SOUND: The Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack for "The Big Tease" is pretty limited in terms of scope, with the most interesting use of the sound before the opening with the sound of a hair dryer going from speaker-to-speaker. Once the movie starts though, the film calms down considerably to a dialogue-driven affair, with the occasional touch of thumping music. The only major surround use comes during an unexpected gunfight at about 41 minutes into the movie; other than that, the surrounds remain subtle or just altogether silent. Dialogue is natural, but occasionally it's a little hard to understand Crawford's accent - for the most part though, dialogue is clean and easily understood.

MENUS:: Images from the film are used as backgrounds, and although there is no animation, menus are pretty stylish. The score plays behind the main menu.

EXTRAS: Trailer/cast&crew bios.

Final Thoughts: Although it's not always funny, there are enough solid laughs throughout "The Big Tease" to make it worth a look if you're at the video store looking for a light comedy. Warner's DVD has generally fine picture and audio quality, although there aren't many extras. A solid rental recommendation.
