Wanda Sykes - Sick and Tired
Now I was born and raised in suburbia so initially I was concerned that I wouldn't relate to the stand-up in this DVD. This DVD included a pamphlet with advertisements for more "urban" style DVDs, But "urban" humor didn't seem to be present at all. I love almost all stand-up just as long as it's fairly clean, and good humored. Wanda Sykes has always struck me as a "nut" I can't even pinpoint where I picked that notion up, but this stand-up routine changed my notion dramatically.
I understand with TV shows like South Park, or Family Guy edgy humor is a very "in" thing to do. Wanda Really runs with that, but she doesn't go overboard, she keeps it in check. I draw a line, and if that line is crossed I become turned off. Wanda's delivery is impeccable, and the jokes are subjects that everyone can relate to. With a running time of 70 minutes it's perfect, not to long, but leaves you wanting more.
The only downside I can see from this is the replay value, it just isn't there for me. I will most likely put this on my shelf and in a few years I'll be cleaning and stumble across this DVD and say "oh yeah, I remember watching this" and watch it again. I'll hear the jokes, and laugh all over again. In the near future I don't really see breaking it out again, but still a great DVD.
Were there jokes that I didn't relate to? Of course. She talks about womanly things I really found it hard to pay attention mainly because I couldn't relate, plain and simple. I would recommend this DVD to anyone, anywhere, in any situation.
Menu:Nothing too special here.
The 1.78:1 aspect ratio isn't impressive but this is a stand-up DVD not a flashy, whiz bang, blow me away with special effects DVD I just want to see the facial expressions and audience reaction.
Sound:I was a little disappointed by the sound, I was glad to see 5.1 Dolby surround AND digital DTS. But was disappointed to not really hear it used very often, It stayed in the center channel, and never differed, it never gave me that true surround feeling.
Extras:Extra #1: The first extra is a Q&A with the audience and Wanda. This is truly amazing, and I loved it. It really made me think highly of her, she talks about past TV shows, future plans, and gives some truly hilarious advice. My suggestion that you watch the Q&A extra.
Extra #2: There's also an interview with her at a radio station in Seattle (where the DVD was filmed) and I found this very uninteresting, I have no interest in watching her talk about a show, That was filmed a few month ago, I might have gotten more out of the interview if I lived in Seattle, but I don't so I didn't. It's my recommendation to not waste your time and skip the radio interview extra.
Final Thoughts:Why doesn't Wanda have a TV show anymore? She has a truly original sense of humor, that deserves a spotlight, she just needs a shot. The extras could have been a little more expansive in this DVD, and the sound a little more dynamic. But the jokes were solid, and kept me laughing throughout the show. This is 70 minutes of pure entertainment.
