Scooby-Doo's Spookiest Tales
Scooby-Doo's Spookiest Tales
Movie:
Scooby-Doo's Spookiest Tales may, at first glance, appear to be the newest direct-to-video Scooby-Doo adventure, but actually, this volume contains five classic episodes, much like Scooby Doo's Original Mysteries. However, unlike Original Mysteries, which presented the first five episodes of the original 1969-1970 Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? series, Spookiest Tales has three episodes from the first series and two episodes, one of which is billed as a "bonus cartoon," from The Scooby-Doo Show which premiered in 1976.
The episodes included, as well as the air dates in paraenthesis are: Vampires, Bats, and Scaredy Cats (1976-77), A Gaggle of Galloping Ghosts (1969), That's Snow Ghost (1970), Which Witch is Which (1969), and Headless Horseman of Halloween (1976-77).
Even though I wasn't even born when these episodes premiered on TV, I still grew up with Scooby-Doo – the show is a timeless classic, as evidenced even today by the numerous direct-to-video Scooby-Doo movies that come out every year. The episodes included on the DVD are all quite good, and bring back some great memories. My favorite episode of the bunch is probably That's Snow Ghost, though the others are good as well. Though I would prefer Warner release the episodes in order on DVD, this is better than nothing, and for those with younger kids who have never seen the original Scooby-Doo episodes, definitely pick up either this disc or Original Mysteries and show them what they've been missing.
Picture:
The episodes in Scooby-Doo's Spookiest Tales are presented in their original 1.33:1 full frame ratios. There are some smaller marks and specks throughout the episodes, as well as some light grain, though neither really distracts. The episodes actually look better than I expected, given that a few of the episodes are past thirty years old.
Sound:
Each episode is presented in the original Dolby 1.0 Mono track in English, Spanish, or French. Dialogue throughout each episode is clean with no distortion that I detected. There are no optional subtitles.
Extras:
The Headless Horseman of Halloween is billed as a "bonus cartoon," and though its listed as an extra, I included it above in the main review. Other extras include a few short trivia tidbits on Scooby-Doo, Shaggy, Velma, Fred, and Daphne, a four-question trivia quiz, and previews for Samurai Jack, Scooby-Doo and the Cyber Chase, Scooby-Doo and the Alien Invaders, Scooby-Doo and the Witch's Ghost, and Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island.
Summary:
Fans of Scooby-Doo will definitely want to consider adding Spookiest Tales to their collection, as Warner has compiled a handful of good episodes on one disc for the reasonable MSRP of $19.98. Recommended!
