The Show:
When it comes to anime, I have mixed feelings. I enjoy certain dramatic, sci-fi, action anime films and shows such as the works of Miyazaki and shows like DEATH NOTE and some of DRAGONBALL Z. However, there is a large portion of anime that quite frankly puzzles and scares me. TENCHI IN TOKYO falls into the latter category.

The disk contains three episodes. Episode 14 (titled "Tokyo Or Bust!") concerns Ayeka and Sasami atempting to visit Tokyo to confront Tenchi about his feelings towards Sakuya. There's also a strange subplot about a couple who came from a comet (don't ask). Episode 15 ("Love Match")is about a schoolmate named Amagasaki trying to interfere with Tenchi and Sakuya. A spirit named Yugi, who wants Tenchi and Sakuya to get together, sends a female wrestler to fight with Amagasaki. Episode 16 ("Carnival!") deals with Akeya, Sasami and a few other characters finally arriving in Tokyo to confront Tenchi only to cause a heap of trouble. We also learn some details about the danger of Tenchi and Sakuya getting together.

TENCHI IN TOKYO is a flat-out spastic show. Characters are constantly screeching at each other for no apparent reason while random bizarre things take place. For instance, Sasami has a cat on her head at times, a robot canine dog appears out of nowhere, the list goes on. When it's all said and done, it leaves me scratching my head. What is the appeal of these sci-fi oddball romantic anime comedies? They barely make a lick of sense and the characters are obnoxious, angry loud mouths. I would love to see an anime show where these characters seek anger management. Many anime characters just need to chill and stop screaming every five seconds.

The DVD

Video:
The video quality is rather poor. The picture is often grainy and I noticed a few scratches here and there. It doesn't help that it's in fullscreen either.

Sound: The sound is acceptable. There's no Dolby Digital track to be found, but the quality is clear enough to hear the character's constant yelling.

Extras: The disk contains a couple extras. There's a music video by Mayumi Iizuka and a trailer for TENCHI IN TOKYO. Neither extra is worth your time. There is also the option of playing TENCHI in Japanese or with an English dub with Japanese or English subtitles. I was definitely grateful that I was able to avoid another bad English dub.

Final Thoughts:
Unless you are already a TENCHI MUYO fan, I can't recommend this anime series. Check out quality anime shows like NEON GENESIS EVANGELION or COWBOY BEBOP instead.
