Andy Kaufman: The Midnight Special
Sony Wonder // Unrated // January 4, 2000
List Price: $19.98 [Buy now and save at Amazon]
Impeccably timed to ride the "Man On The Moon" wave, Sony's released "Andy Kaufman: The Midnight Special", an hour-long television special hosted by Wolfman Jack and featuring some of Andy's best-known bits as well as a couple of musical performances. It's somewhat funny, but considering that pretty much anyone who's interested has seen these bits before.
Video: Considering that "The Midnight Special" was shot on video, the DVD release as nice as it possibly can. It definitely looks superior to the excerpts I've seen on the numerous Andy Kaufman specials on cable.
Audio: The audio, though hardly a showcase of anyone's sound system, is serviceable, and the musical performances sound fantastic. As well done as you'd expect, I suppose.
Extras: Not much in the way of extras, although some of the notes included on the disc are interesting to read.
Conclusion: If you found "Man On The Moon" at all interesting, I'd recommend renting "The Midnight Special" so that you can really see Andy in action. Unless you're a die-hard fan or can get the disc at a great price, I wouldn't recommend it as a purchase. The material is dated and overexposed, and it's not all that long.
