National Lampoon's Loaded Weapon I
List Price: Unknown [Buy now and save at Amazon]
"National Lampoon's Loaded Weapon I" takes the same approach to humor as "Hot Shots" and "Airplane" -- if you tell enough jokes, sooner or later, you'll laugh. How high the laugh-to-joke ratio stacks up depends on the viewer, but if enough people get together to watch it, you can bet on having a pretty good time. The plot has everything you'd expect in a generic cop flick -- it's up to two cops to stop a general from spreading drugs throughout the country. It's an excellent parody and very much worth a rental.
Video: If it were any other studio, I'd expect the movie to be full-frame and probably reusing a Laserdisc transfer. Thankfully, New Line never ceases to disappoint, and we get a very nice looking anamorphic transfer with a minimum of dust, grain, and digital artifacts. You can tell at a glance at the image that "Loaded Weapon I" wasn't a particularly high budget movie, but this is the best visual presentation you can get outside of the theater.
Audio: Most comedies usually have pretty lackluster sound, but the blending of action elements with the comedy means there's a chance to rattle the foundation. "Loaded Weapon I" has plenty of explosions to take advantage of the low-end, and it uses surround effects pretty effectively as well.
Extras: You get the usual catalog title extras -- a theatrical trailer and cast/crew biographies.
Conclusion: Buddy cop movies -- love 'em or hate 'em, you'll probably find "Loaded Weapon I" to be pretty funny. I could see myself watching it again in a few months, but it's better suited to a rental than a purchase.
