The Movie:

When Robert 'Evel' Knievel died in November of 2007 he left behind him a legacy of insane daredevil stunts that influenced countless kids who grew up in the seventies and early eighties and which continues to amaze spectators through the marvels of home video to this day. While it might be hard to believe now, those of us who are old enough to remember Evel Knievel-mania while it was in full swing can absolutely attest to the fact that the man was a genuine phenomena. To honor the man and his storied career, BMX superstar Mat Hoffman assembled a team of stunt riders in the wastelands of rural Oklahoma to try and beat a few world records and try a few Evel style stunts. You'd expect something like this would be performed in front of a large crowd at an auditorium or coliseum but the only spectators here are the cast, the crew, and Johnny Knoxville of Jackass fame who serves alongside Hoffman as a commentator and sometimes participant.

In between various stunts, the performers share stories about meeting Evel Knievel and what he and his work meant to them as well as how his pioneering work as a professional daredevil paved the way for their current work. A few amusing stories are shared as is much sincere admiration for the man's efforts but the real reason to check out this brief forty-seven minute feature is for the stunts.

Stunt riders such as Travis Pastrana, Scott 'Plamer' Palmer, Allan Cooke, Davin 'Psycho' Halford, Trigger Gumm, 'Harley' Jeff Schneider and a little person who goes by the handle 'Midget Mike' all line up to perform a few different stunts. Tandem jumps and flips, BMX jumps, Harley flips, back flips and an insane free fall from an airplane without a parachute (courtesy of Palmer) are all performed to varying degrees of success and while they guys do manage to set a pair of new world records, Hoffman insists more than once that what's important here isn't the numbers, it's honoring Knievel's spirit of determination.

Knoxville plays his usual charming goofball self as commentator but it's when he decides to attempt a couple of motorcycle stunts of his own that Hoffman's credo becomes manifest. Towards the end of the feature Knoxville (either very bravely or very stupidly) attempts to back flip a motorbike without ever having learned how to ride one. His first attempt fails fairly miserably but it's his remarkable second attempt that lands the bike on his going and sends him to the hospital with a ruptured urethra, pissing blood all the way there.

While this just barely qualifies as Jackass material (at one point Knoxville is joined by Spike Jonze and Jeff Tremaine pops up now and again but don't expect to see Steve-O, Chris Pontius, Bam, Steve-O or any of the others), it is a fitting tribute to the late Evel Knievel by some gents who very sincerely cared for the man and appreciated his efforts. On top of that, it's also a solid collection of quality stunt footage.

The DVD

Video:

For reasons unknown, this feature is presented in non-anamorphic 1.85.1 widescreen that hasn't even been properly flagged for progressive scan. With those two major strikes against it, the disc looks alright otherwise. This material was shot on DV so it doesn't have the depth or clarity of something shot on film and on top of that it wasn't shot under the most ideal conditions. The material is completely watchable, however. Color reproduction is decent and there aren't any problems with mpeg compression artifacts or print damage. A little bit of edge enhancement and shimmering is noticeable but it isn't overpowering.

Sound:

The only audio track on this disc is an English language Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo track. No alternate dubs, subtitles or closed captioning is provided. Some scenes sound better than others depending on the weather conditions at the time the material was shot. There are a few scenes with a lot of wind noise. The levels fluctuate a bit and some scenes, noticeably those with the motorbikes in them, are quite a bit louder than others. Overall, this is a satisfactory track - you won't have any problems understanding the performers and it gets the job done - but like the transsfer, it certainly could have been better.

Extras:

Paramount/Dickhouse have supplied a reasonably good array of supplements to go along with the feature starting with a Mat Hoffman section. Here we get a brief text biography of Hoffman as well as a Career Retrospective (18:25) featurette where Hoffman is interviewed about his life, his work, his career, his family and his numerous injuries. There's some interesting archival footage in here from throughout Mat's career as well as some cool personal photographs and clips from his home movies.

From there, check out the Bonus Footage (available individually or by way of a handy-dandy 'play all' option) staring with Thoughts On Evel Knieval (6:12), where most of the principal cast members share their memories of the late daredevil and tell a few amusing stories about him. Behind The Scenes (15:15) is a collection of random clips shot on set covering everything from where and how to hang the jackassworld.com banner to someone peeing on a car to Knoxville's exit in the ambulance. Travis Pastrana Pit Session (3:37) is a selection of outtakes from the part of the feature where the aforementioned rider tries to flip a Harley Davison while Plamer Vs. Jolene (2:37) is an amusing bit where Scott 'Plamer' Palmer gets schooled on how to flip a dirt bike by Jolene VanVught. Knoxville's Hospital Visit (2:47) is exactly that, a few snippets of unused footage from Johnny's proudest moment and the Tattoo Montage (3:27) is a collection of footage where Hoffman gives each of the rider's in the feature an Evel Knieval tattoo, with some help from Knoxville who excels at tattooing people with blotches and dots. A trailer for Thrillbillies (0:37), which appears to be a collection of pretty cool stunt riding footage, is also included in this section for some reason.

Up next is a brief text biography on Stephan Murray, a BMX rider who was paralyzed from the neck down in 2007. Stephen's Story (11:12) is a video segment where Murray talks on camera about what happened to him while friends and family members comment on his genuine braveness and amazingly positive attitude. This segment serves as a fairly serious reminder about just how dangerous some of these stunts really are.

Rounding out the extra features is a brief text piece advertising Evel Knieval Days (a tribute to the man held each year in Butte, Montana), a still gallery, a weblink, trailers for other unrelated DVDs, and a trio of music videos: Smut Peddlers - Let's Get Fucked Up, HDR - Thailand, and Black Ladies - Shannon Tweed. Menus and chapter selection are also found on the DVD.

Final Thoughts:

While the Jackass banner may be displayed loud and proud across the cover, this is really Hoffman and his crew doing their thing with Knoxville serving as a commentator and sometimes participant. It's an amusing and entertaining collection of stunt footage but those going in expecting the frat boy humor of Jackass may be left wanting. Regardless, it is what it is and the short running time is compensated nicely by some decent supplements making this recommended for the Jackass completist and a solid rental for everyone else.
