Drop Dead Gorgous
A mock-u-mentary look at a Minnesota beauty pagent this seemingly light comedy has a pure black heart as it brutally satirizes the cult of beauty. Drop Dead Gorgeous is filled with cruel and sick humor that absolutely pulls no punches. At times the movie is laugh out loud funny, while at others it's just plain sick and twisted. One of the highlights of the film is the performance of Kirsten Dunst who really shines as the underdog contestant and apparent target of the beauty queen to be, played by Denise Richards (who still can't manage to act.)
The Picture:
As always Newline Cinema did a fantastic job with the transfer of this film on to DVD. The picture is clear, clean and crisp and matches the high level of quality consistent with DVD's released from Newline. This DVD is also anamorphic/enhanced for 16X9 TV's.
The Sound:
As with the picture, Drop Dead Gorgeous sounds great with a strong and clear Dolby Digital 5.1 audio track
The Extras:
Drop Dead Gorgeous is a little light on extras which is OK, this isn't the kind of movie that screams for extras, although an outtake reel would have been fun. Included on the DVD are trailers to Drop Dead Gorgeous as well as one for Deconstructing Harry (hidden in Kirstie Alley's bio), Wag The Dog (under Kirsten Dunst's bio) and National Lampoons Loaded Weapon (under Denise Richards'). On the DVD Rom side Newline has provided a script to screen extra feature that is great for revisiting some of the more memorable scenes.
Conclusion:
I had a lot of fun watching Drop Dead Gorgeous, it was fun, quirky and unique and wasn't afraid to be sick and twisted. If you are a Kirsten Dunst fan you'll want to be sure to see this film.
