Stealing Home

Stealing Home is the "Patch Adams" of baseball films. It tries as hard as it can to try to evoke some sort of emotion in the viewer rather than trying to contain any semblance of substance. It's a mind-numbingly boring film, not to mention a very poorly made DVD, and there's absolutely no reason why anyone should subject themselves to this sort of cinematic torture.

"Stealing Home" is about a farm-team baseball player whose long-time friend (and one true love) has recently committed suicide. Through a series of interminable flashbacks, Billy has to figure out what to do with her ashes and where his life goes from here.

Video: Was this made from a Laserdisc transfer? "Stealing Home" has more 'noise' than any other disc I've seen to date, and the print used was obviously caked with dust. Although I wasn't expecting a pristine anamorphic transfer from something in Warner's discount line, I'm disappointed that the pan-and-scan video is of such low quality.

Audio: The audio does make up for the massive shortcomings in the video, however. The soundtrack sounds wonderful, and the dialogue and ambient noises sound clear. The mix is very well done, although at times some songs seemed exceptionally loud.

Extras: Nothing at all.

Conclusion: "Stealing Home" looks like a Madacy disc stamped with the Warner label, and t's an incredibly boring movie that tries as hard as it possibly can to tug on your heartstrings. Either one of those would be enough for me to say "Skip it", and both of them on one disc is truly an embarassment.
