The Movie:

While GG Allin may have had a considerably more varied musical career than most people realized, that's not what he'll be remembered for. GG's claim to fame isn't really his musical legacy so much as it is his penchant for chaos and the shock value he brought with him to the stage. For those unfamiliar with Allin's antics, he was known for throwing his own feces into the crowd (if not for rolling around in it and sometimes eating it), pissing on stage, performing naked, cutting himself, getting into fights with audience members and venue security, rampant drug use, committing lewd sex acts on stage and generally disrespecting anything and everything he could.

This latest DVD is made up of live clips from the later period of his career, though nowhere in the presentation does it say where the material came from. Containing twelve songs spread out over a forty-five minute running time, The Best Of GG Allin & The Murder Junkies is, unfortunately not even close to a complete concert. Instead, this is a bunch of different concerts edited together, meaning that while GG is singing one song, he may be naked in one shot, covered in blood and shit in the next, holding an American flag over his junk in the third shot and wrapped in a garbage bag in the forth. It's a bit frustrating as while you're watching GG crap on stage and throw chairs at people you can't help but wonder why we're not getting the complete concert(s). The audio track seems to have been taken from one complete source, but the video underneath it definitely was not.

As annoying as the editing is, however, there is some interesting footage here. GG's rants to the audience, generally directed towards major label record companies and cops, are amusing (and sometimes surprisingly astute) and the crude antics that made him famous are definitely on proper display. GG craps on stage, takes a piss or two, shoves his crotch into a woman's face, punches audience members, throws furniture, shoves a microphone up his ass, and sits on the pointy end of a traffic cone. More often than not he's bleeding or at the very least covered in dried blood and shit, and there's no doubt that the man's 'freak show' factor is certainly something to be seen.

Just as interesting are the reactions that Allin and his band get from the audience who have paid to see them. While some obviously take offence to Allin's performance, going so far as to assault him a few times, others encourage him to go further and further with his act - something he was generally all too keen to accept. While Allin may have died in 1993 (he overdosed on heroin in New York City after getting out of prison and attending the premiere of the Hated documentary that was made about him) his cult following continues. The man definitely made an impression on people and love him or hate him (he'd probably have preferred the later) you can't deny his dedication to his work.

The complete list of songs included on this release is:

Look Into My Eyes & Hate Me / Outlaw Scumfuc / Kill Everything I Fuck / I Wanna Rape You / Gypsy Motherfucker / Hangin Out With Jim / Die When You Die / Kill The Police / Expose Yourself To Kids / I Love To Be Hated / Cunt Sucking Cannibal / Bite It You Scum

A quick interview with GG's mother shot in a dark wood paneled room plays before the concert footage starts, in which she explains how he got his name and tells a couple of stories about her late son.

The DVD

Video:

As mentioned, this DVD was pieced together from at least five different shows, each of which was shot with a camcorder in a dimly lit bar. Quality is all over the place and while it's all watchable enough, it leans towards the dark and murky as you'd probably have guessed. There aren't any problems with mpeg compression artifacts or anything like that, but the VHS source tapes from which this material was culled definitely shows its limitations.

Sound:

This release contains a stereo track alongside a remixed 5.1 Dolby Digital Surround Sound track. Aside from a little surround action during the live scenes, there's not much difference here between the stereo track and the fancy new Surround Mix. GG's rants from the stage can be a little hard to hear and there's distortion evident throughout. The levels are generally well balanced but this material sounds like it was recorded on low end equipment in a dingy rock club... probably because it was.

Extras:

The only extra on this disc, aside from some animated menus and a song selection option, is an interview with GG Allin's mom (20:41) that was recorded in 2008. This kindly and remarkably tranquil old lady talks quite nonchalantly about her sons GG and Merle Allin and discusses their childhood through to their adult years. It's not surprising to learn that the two were often times up to no good. While this interview isn't all that informative, it's surreal enough to be interesting and Allin's fans will definitely get a kick out of this, as strange as it is.

Final Thoughts:

You have to wonder why MVD didn't just release the shows that this 'best of' DVD is compiled from. Seeing a few complete GG Allin shows would have been a lot more rewarding than watching forty-five minutes of clips from a few different shows haphazardly edited together into one unconvincing whole. While those who want nothing from Allin save for shock value will no doubt get their fix, this all just feels incomplete. Collector's will want it, the curious should rent it first.
