Thicker Than Water

Thicker Than Water is the tale of DJ and Lonzo, two struggling music producers from the inner-city who form a bond during a turf war between their respective gangs. Despite the way it sounds, this definitely isn't an ABC After-School special. DJ and Lonzo get involved with drug trafficking to fund their musical venture, and after the two have a falling-out, things take a very violent turn for the worse.

The Video: The clarity of the full-frame video is somewhat inconsistent, with some shots being crystal-clear and subsequent shots in the same scene seeming overly soft. This is more than likely due to the source material, since Thicker Than Water didn't have the benefit of a particularly large budget. The video quality is certainly acceptable though, and it never detracts from the film as a whole.

The Audio: As you'd expect from a film that mixes a hip-hop heavy soundtrack with several violent shoot-outs, there's quite a low-end punch. This movie is very much driven by dialogue (although admittedly, Shakespeare it's not), which is always distinct and clear.

The Extras: There are two music videos (Westside Connection and MC Eiht), a theatrical trailer, cast bios, and a preview of other Palm Pictures releases (which includes a PSA featuring Chuck D, presumably made by Palm Pictures). I always enjoy hearing commentary tracks from independent filmmakers, and I really feel that Thicker Than Water would've greatly benefited from one. Considering that this wasn't a special edition release though, I was pleased with the number of extras.

The Conclusion: I enjoyed Thicker Than Water, although I was a bit let down in that I was expecting it to focus more on DJ and Lonzo's musical assault on the industry rather than the steps they took to raise the capital. Also, without spoiling things, there's a plot twist revealed near the end that I did find somewhat unnecessary that muddled the message I was expecting from the film. Still, Thicker Than Water is very well-made, very entertaining, and is recommended for rental and purchase.

Final Word: Thicker Than Water was released in 1999 and features the late Big Pun in a supporting role. I found his very-noticeable labored breathing to be very disturbing, considering his recent passing.
