Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me
New Line // PG-13 // November 16, 1999
List Price: $19.98 [Buy now and save at Amazon]
The Movie:
Everyone's favorite international man of mystery rides again! This time, Austin Powers finds himself back in the '60s trying to stop Dr. Evil and recover his missing mojo. If you've seen the first Austin Powers film, you've heard most of these jokes before, but regardless, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me still managed to entertain for the most part and is a worthy sequel.
The Video:
New Line always does a spectacular job with their transfers, and Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me is no exception. This transfer is crisp and vibrant, and if you want to show novices just how much of an improvement DVD is over VHS, I'd recommend putting in this disc.
The Sound:
As with most comedies, the sound mix is hardly reference quality, but it's quite good nonetheless. The star-studded soundtrack, transition music, and Austin's theme are presented quite well on the disc. Overall, nothing remarkable, despite the hyped 6.1 sound.
The Extras:
This is where the disc really shines. I'm hard-pressed to think of a DVD more packed with features than Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me. You get a slew of deleted scenes, three music videos, several trailers, a commentary track (which is better than the first Austin Powers commentary, but not one of my favorites by any means), a behind the scenes featurette, as well as the Comedy Central "Canned Ham" special. Most of these don't hold up to repeated viewings (especially the Comedy Central special), but I appreciate their inclusion nonetheless. You'll spend the better part of a day going through all of these.
Conclusion:
This is a funny film, but it seems like too much of a retread of the original. If you already have the first disc and enjoyed it, I'd definitely recommend Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, but for those of you new to the series, I'd recommend getting the more original and far more entertaining Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery first.
