Movie: I've seen a lot of movies over the years and a lot of stuff from Japan. Most of them have either been anime or monster movies but there've been a number of obscure releases too. Colorful is perhaps the most offbeat show I can remember. The whole show focused on a group of guys who spend most of their day looking up young women's skirts to see their panties. The show being in anime, and not real life, means it has to be extremely funny or run the risk of being very geeky. Luckily, the show, all 16 episodes of this short lived series (it was a short piece on a longer show called Wonderful-itself based on a comic: Weekly Young Jump), were funny to this pervert. The situations the guys would find themselves in were almost all plausible enough (except for the giant woman scene) to take place in real life which made them all the funnier. The over-reactions were priceless and they got even more outrageous as they progressed towards the end.

Picture: The picture was presented in 1.33:1 ratio full frame color. The arty style contributed to the overall effect here in the sixteen, 7 minute long, episodes.

Sound: The audio was presented in both a 5.1 Dolby Digital English track or a 2.0 Dolby Japanese track. Each had their own strengths and the subtitles were not strictly translated from the English track.

Extras: The best extra was the behind the scenes feature with some of the English language cast at the ADV offices. There was also a clean opening and ending. Top it off with the trailer and some ADV previews, as well as a double sided dvd cover, and you have a good set of extras.

Final Thoughts: This has got to be one of the most guilty pleasures I've watched in quite some time. I can only imagine how I'd explain the appeal of this one to my friends if they were to see the dvd box on my TV set some day. "No wait guys, it's funny!" In all, the sixteen episodes lasted the better part of two hours and after watching it several times, I can honestly say you'll either love it or hate it-and if you're like me, you'll like it more every time you watch it. If you're looking for something so bizarre that it all but defies logic, yet still makes you laugh out loud, Colorful is a good bet for your money.
