Rooster Teeth: Best of RT Shorts and Animated Adventures

List Price: $19.95 [Buy now and save at Amazon]
The Series:
Rooster Teeth has become an internet industry of its own, starting over 10 years ago when Burnie Burns and friends contributed voice-overs for characters in "Halo"'s multi-player universe. The result became "Red Vs. Blue", an often-brilliant (and often downright hilarious) "Office Space"-like comedy. As "Red Vs. Blue" grew in popularity, the series expanded in scope and technical detail, now in its 11th season. Rooster Teeth also went on to create similarly comedic promos for other games.
Over time, Rooster Teeth also expanded, with "Red Vs. Blue" as the centerpiece of what became something of an internet "network", offering everything from live-action shorts to the stunning new animated series, "RWBY."
The live action "RT Shorts" was one of the company's first live-action efforts. While the series isn't without a few lesser efforts at times, the shorts are mostly delightful, highlighting the group's success at finding the absurd in office life ("Dilbert", only for G4) and pop culture. As for the latter, particularly funny is a short late in the set, "Angry Birds: The Movie", with the group doing a particularly good job on no budget offering up what the app-turned-movie would look like if directed by Michael Bay. A horror movie parody featuring Apple's "Siri" program also gets a few laughs (and I'm guessing is probably a favorite at Microsoft.)
"Food War" is another highlight, with a bizarre office game of essentially trying to get a chance to spit unwanted food at each other turns into a inter-dimensional incident when a delicious traveler from another dimension comes back to discuss matters with the RT staff. "Complaint Box" ("I don't like how everyone slaps me" and office complaints based around Mad Libs) also gets some solid chuckles. "Secret Door" also gets a few minor laughs based around an intern not being let into the office closet.
There is one particular highlight that I'm surprised didn't end up on this compilation and that's "Credit Counseling", where Geoff gets busted for a charge to the office credit card that has to deal with management of time - literally.
The second disc is full of animated adventures from the crew - they're very similar in tone and style to the shorts, only animated. These shorts do get some mild laughs and the primitive animation is actually has an engaging style. The commentaries from the RT crew between the shorts are often as funny as the shorts.
Overall, this latest effort from the Rooster Teeth crew is worth a look - while not as brilliant as the best of "Red Vs Blue", the shorts certainly get some good laughs.
VIDEO: Both the live-action shorts and animated efforts are presented well by this DVD edition, appearing reasonably crisp and detailed (considering the budget/material) and not showing much in the way of concerns.
AUDIO: Basic stereo audio, which certainly gets the job done.
EXTRAS: The set certainly offers a nice variety of extras, including bonus shorts, trailers for other Rooster Teeth material, outtakes, production examples and "The Kinda True Story Behind the Rooster Teeth Shorts", a hilarious "Behind The Music"-style look at Rooster Teeth's success and downfall.
Final Thoughts:: Although I don't think the shorts are as brilliant as "Red Vs Blue" often has been over the years, but they are still very entertaining. The DVD offers fine audio/video quality, as well as a nice helping of extras. Recommended.
