Movie: Anime is often the source of non-traditional stories with anti-hero's as the focal point. Such is the case with Crying Freeman. The dvd is comprised of two episodes of a story that centered around a hired killer, Yo Hinomura, who is the best assassin in the gang known as the 108 Dragons. Torn from a life as an acclaimed artist, he was brainwashed and forced to become something totally opposite, a merciless killer who follows orders and sheds silent tears for his victims. The show was originally from 1988 and had a fair amount of nudity and a lot of bloody violence when Yo took on the opponents of his gang. Seeing heads blown apart, throats cut and other means by which the various gangsters attempt to send each other to an early grave is half the fun here. If you aren't into violent anime, don't bother with this one. Here's what the box cover said about volume 2: "By taking the Chinese names "Ron Tayan" (Dragon Sun) and "Fu Ching-Ran" (Tiger Orchid), Hinomura and his wife Emu Hino show their commitment to the venerable Hong Kong cartel The 108 Dragons. Now they face both betrayal from within their own group and a hostile take-over attempt by a new terrorist gang trying to muscle in on the international crime scene.
Later, master Naiji-a powerful and driven fanatic-schemes to use the 108 Dragons' influence to spread his "Great Bear God" religion throughout the world. Forming an unlikely alliance with two of Freeman's past enemies, Naiji plans to replace the reluctant leader of Hong Kong's pre-eminent crime cartel with a perfect double capable of fooling everyone, even his wife!" The two episodes on the disc were Shades Of Death (part 2) and A Taste Of Revenge. I don't want to ruin the minimal plot but if you're into this kind of thing, it's worth checking out.

Picture: The picture was presented in full frame 1.33:1 ratio. Yes, the age of the source material shows but most fans won't care. The dvd transfer was pretty good but there seemed to be only so much that could be done with it and a couple of artifacts popped up once in awhile.

Sound: The standard choices of 5.1 English, English with song subtitles, or Japanese with English subtitles was present with 2.0 stereo. Each track was pretty good with few problems associated with older releases.

Extras: a few trailers and a paper insert with a chapter breakdown were it.

Final Thoughts: Given some of the absolutely great anime I've watched lately, this series seems even more dated than the first volume I reviewed in February did but it's not completely without merit. Some fans of the Manga series probably would like this one enough to buy it but it's pretty limited when compared to other shows focusing on assassins like NOIR. Look at it as a rental first or wait until the final dvd is released (so that maybe a lower priced boxed set will come out).
