Sukeban Deka
The show was a two part release, complete on this DVD, that detailed the story of a young girl named Saki. Originally a crook who controlled a school, she was caught and imprisoned when she took the fall for a friend. Like all such enterprises, other crooks filled the vacuum of power but they were much worse than Saki. The police decided they could use Saki to take down the Mizuchi crime syndicate, which is comprised of three treacherous sisters financed by their well connected father. One is obsessed with making money, another with her art, and the third with power. Saki's only weapon is a metal yoyo (which was a deadly weapon a long time ago we're told-mostly in the Philippines per my research) which she uses to dispatch her foes. Saki's not too keen on helping the police so they use her mom (on death row) against her. In the end, we all know what'll happen but getting there is most of the fun (usually). Here's what ADV says about the movie: "The last time Saki left school it was to change her school uniform for prison greys, but when the Feds needed someone to infiltrate a ruthless criminal organization operating within an exclusive high school, they knew they needed the baddest bad girl of them all! Now Saki's back on the streets for the ultimate final exam, armed with a top-secret weapon that only LOOKS like a yo-yo, and a license to use whatever force necessary to achieve her goal. Saki's lovely, lethal and ready to lay it all on the line—because if she fails this test, the next outfit she'll be wearing is a body bag!"
Picture: The movie was presented in full frame, 1.33:1 ratio. The show was definitely less colorful than most anime and looked kind of dull. The animation style was fairly limited too. I only noticed a few minor problems with the picture, including a few artifacts, some shimmer, and a less than perfect source material.
Sound: The sound was presented in a choice of English or Japanese 2.0 stereo. The Japanese track was far superior but nothing to write home about itself. Some of the English acting was really bad-far below what I expect from ADV these days.
Extras: 6 trailers
Final Thoughts: There were some adult themes here, including violence, rape, killing, and a host of other stuff that parents typically don't want their kids exposed to. The fact is, the characters here are even more one dimensional than usual for anime which limits the amount of fun you'll have. The situations were not exactly cutting edge either and that contributed to the weakness of the show. Had there been even one reason to recommend this release, I'd be writing about it but the combined weakness of the content, the limitations of the animation, and the age of the material (it was made in 1991 on a low budget), it's worth a rental at most (on a good day).
