Movie: I've never understood why police shows are so popular in so many cultures. Whether in Japan or the USA (and most places in between), there seems to be some mystique attached to what is generally mundane work. In the pop culture reality shows like COPS, you probably see more action in the half hour than most police officers see in years of duty. That said, we turn our reviewer eye to a cute little comedy show known as You're Under Arrest. It details the life and times of two traffic cops (probably the most intelligent group of police on the force) and their two friends. The actual series is being released by AnimEigo but ADV has the rights to the mini-series released in 1999. It shows a lot of shorter scenes that typically focus on peeping toms, panty thieves, and traffic violators in funny situations. I'm not going to break down every 5 minute (or so) scene but if you like light-hearted humor that centers on police and young females with badges, you're going to enjoy this one a lot. Here's what the boxcover said: "The mean streets of Tokyo are that much safer when the ladies of Bokuto Police Station are on patrol! When the fun-loving and free-wheeling Natsumi teams up with the mechanical wizard Miyuki, criminals don't stand a chance. From booby-trapped handbags to exhibitionists from beyond the grave to geriatric gearheads, you'll be rolling on the floor with laughter at these 20 mini-episodes. Will they be able to protect their undergarments and co-workers from the depredations of an army of Tokyo's oversexed peeping Toms? Can Natsumi's finances hold out until her next paycheck clears? Chaos ensues and neither speeders nor sneaks stand a chance as Miyuki and Natsumi show that crime doesn't pay!"

Picture: The show was presented in full frame 1.33:1 ratio and looked only a bit above average. Some of the source material looked a bit off (focus, detail, and other minor issues) but due to the subject matter, you probably won't care as much. The DVD looks a lot better than any other source I've seen this one on.

Sound: The sound was presented in 2.0 Stereo with options for either Japanese or English. Interestingly enough, both seemed a bit different but equally fun with the subtitles varying a bit on the original language track.

Extras: Only some ADV trailers but the show's length (almost 150 minutes) made up for the lack of extras in a big way.

Final Thoughts: In a sub-genre such as this, you'd think it's all been said and done but you'd be wrong. While some of the scenes were a bit on the weak side, far more often than not they were laugh out loud funny. The misadventures of Natsumi and Miyuki easily earned a place on my shelf and I think the dvd was worth a High Recommendation. The dvd was "rated" 15+ by ADV due to the adult nature of some of the humor but you'd really have to be uptight to be offended by this cute show.
