Movie:
Excellent Cadavers is an HBO original movie starring Chazz Palminteri as Giovanni Falcone and F. Murray Abraham as Tommasso Buscetta. Set in Palermo, Sicily, and Rome, Italy, Excellent Cadavers is based on a true story about a man (Falcone) who takes on the Mafia in their home territory in an effort to change and make better his home country. The title refers to prominent government officials who are murdered by the Mafia.

Falcone is obsessed with bringing the Mafia to justice, and when he uncovers evidence proving that the Mafia is involved in drugs, government pay-offs and murders, he becomes their target. However, his biggest break comes when Buscetta, "The Godfather of Two Worlds" is arrested. Buscetta agrees to help Falcone with his investigation and provide information in exchange for the promise of security for his family. Falcone, with the help of friend Paolo Borsellino (played by Andy Luotto), sets up the Anti-Mafia Pool, and is joined by fellow judges and government officials. With the information Buscetta provides, Falcone sets up a trial for nearly 500 members of the Mafia, and over 1,000 witnesses and lawyers.

Excellent Cadavers has an interesting story, if sometimes convoluted due to the short running time of the feature. The fairly narrow focus on Falcone, his love interest (played by Anna Galiena), his friendship with Borsellino, and his quest for bringing the Mafia to justice are the main points of the movie, but it hinders not having the Mafia side more fleshed out in detail.

Picture:
The picture is presented in 1.33:1 full frame, and contains a LOT of pixelation. Almost every chapter contains at least some pixelation; some more than others. It is very distracting, and it's by far the low point of the disc.

Sound:
Excellent Cadavers is presented in Dolby Digital Surround (English) and Dolby Digital Mono (Spanish). While certainly not the best it could have been, it is adequate for a made-for-television feature. The helicopter in Chapter 10 sounds great, and a few of the scenes involving gunshots aren't bad. The score for Excellent Cadavers is very good.

Extras:
Excellent Cadavers contains Cast and Crew Bios (six total), Scene Access (14 chapters), and subtitles in Spanish, French, and English.

Summary:
Although Excellent Cadavers has a relatively attractive price and a decent storyline/plot, I have to recommend that everyone skip over this one on DVD because of the poor picture quality. Rent only if you must, this one is better viewed on HBO re-runs.
