The Movie:

I generally enjoy reviewing music DVDs, even if they aren't groups or singers I'm particularly a fan of. They provide not only the chance to experience great audio, but many provide wonderful background details about the artist, or interesting extras. "Whitney Houston - Greatest Hits" excells in some areas that will please her fans, but there are a couple of sections where the DVD comes up a little short.

Track Listing
1. You Give Good Love
2. Saving All My Love For You
3. How Will I Know
4. Greatest Love Of All
5. I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)
6. Didn't We Almost Have It All
7. So Emotional
8. Where Do Broken Hearts Go
9. I'm Your Baby Tonight
10. All The Man That I Need
11. The Star Spangled Banner (Performed Live 1/27/91 at Super Bowl XXV)
12. I Will Always Love You
13. I'm Every Woman
14. I Have Nothing
15. Run To You
16. Queen Of The Night
17. Step By Step
18. Heartbreak Hotel (Featuring Faith Evans & Kelly Price)
19. My Love Is Your Love
20. It's Not Right But It's Okay
21. I Learned From The Best

Putting the singer's recent personal troubles behind her, this compliation does show off her talents quite well.

The DVD

VIDEO/AUDIO: Seeing as this is a music DVD, the audio will be covered first. Although I wasn't completely dissapointed in the audio, it does come up a bit lacking in comparison to some of the other musical titles I've reviewed. The audio does vary throughout the songs selected, with the later tunes sounding a little better than the earlier portion.

Still, the music lacks a little bit of warmth to it; it was never thin or problematic in any way such as distortion, it just comes up slightly lacking in fullness at times. There's not much bass to the proceedings, either. Surrounds open up the music enjoyably, but their use isn't terribly creative or remarkable. The audio for the more recent songs such as "Step By Step" do manage to come a little closer to achieving what I was looking for on the audio for this disc. As for Whitney's voice, it carries very well on all of these songs, but I have a feeling it could sound even better than this presentation offers.

The video quality is consistently good, although again, the newer songs do look better than the older material. Colors are bright and strong, never bleeding. Images on the newer songs look especially sharp and probably better than they looked on VH-1 or MTV. Aside from a little bit of shimmering here and there, the image quality remains impressively clean.

MENUS:: Now this is a cool little bit of work. If you saw the animated Mike Meyers that introduced the main menus for the second "Austin Powers" film, Whitney Houston herself does something similar here, with an animated Whitney leading us through the menu offerings. Impressive work and a lot of fun!.

EXTRAS: The extras really don't dissapoint here, either. The first offering is a short interview with Houston herself, who gives some insights into her work between clips from her hits. There is also an interview with Arista president(although I'm not sure if he's still president) Clive Davis, who shares his view on the singer's career.

Next up are some of Houston's live performances, presented in Dolby 2.0 sound. They are:
1. Home (Whitney's Premiere Performance on The Merv Griffin Show, 4/29/85)
2. Lover For Life (A Concert For A New South Africa, 11/12/94)
3. One Moment In Time (Live from the 1989 Grammy Awards)
4. My Love Is Your Love (Live from Mannheim, Germany, 1999
5. Why Does It Hurt So Bad (Live from the 1996 MTV Movie Awards)
6. It's Not Right But It's Okay (From MTV All Access, 7/9/99
7. Impossible (From Disney's Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella)

Finally, there is a short featurette that takes viewers behind the scenes at the "Greatest Hits" photo shoot, as well as the option of lyrics while the songs play. Last but not least, I was suprised and pleased to see a bonus CD single for Houston's "I Learned From The Best" included inside, which is a nice addition.

Final Thoughts: While the audio for the songs occasionally comes up short, the video quality is quite good, and the extras provide a more in-depth look at the singer's career, especially with the performance footage.
