Movie:
My So-Called Life, the critically acclaimed teenage television drama from 1994, makes its first appearance on DVD and contains three full-length episodes: The Pilot, Dancing in the Dark, and Guns and Gossip. Claire Danes stars as Angela Chase, a teenager trying to come to terms with who she is, while going through the mostly usual experiences of being a teen. Throughout the three episodes here, she shuts out her best friend Sharon, after she feels they've grown apart; she starts hanging out with her new friends, Rayanne and Rickie; she develops a crush on Jordan, a bad-boy type guy who has been held back in High School twice; her parents try out ballroom dancing; and she finds herself the victim of a malicious rumor. Many other things happen, not only in her life, but also in the lives of the supporting cast, during these episodes.

I had never seen My So-Called Life before watching this collection. My So-Called Life, based on these episodes, is a very fleshed out drama. Chase is a very complex character (as most teens are), and is played quite well by Danes. Each supporting character is terrific in their roles, and they portray different types of teenagers. The experiences and situations Chase goes through are easy to relate to and ring true – one of the reasons it was so highly praised and acclaimed during its run on TV over 5 years ago.

Picture:
My So-Called Life is presented in 1.33:1 full screen, as it was originally presented on TV. The picture is fine throughout most of each episode; however, some grain is noticeable in each. Also, the colors in first part of the Pilot are muted and drab compared to the other two episodes on the disc, but this may or may not be intentional.

Sound:
My So-Called Life has been remastered in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround, and although its not very active, it does help with some background noises (wind rustling, breezes, papers crumpling, etc). For a TV show not originally in 5.1, and containing mostly spoken dialogue, it works well. There is also a Dolby Stereo track.

Extras:
Extras include 5 chapter stops for each episode, which can be played together or separately. The interactive motion menus are a nice touch as well. Also included are two trailers for the other two volumes of My So-Called Life DVDs that are planned. Each will also contain three episodes, and the trailers for both volumes run about ten minutes together.

Summary:
My So-Called Life: Volume One contains three terrific episodes detailing the life and experiences of the "typical" teenager, Angela Chase. Although low on extras (biographies or series information would've been nice), the picture and sound are adequate, and allow those who missed out on the series before a chance to experience it now. Recommended for fans of the TV series, and those interested in teenage dramas.
