Movie:
This Dennis Miller concert video is from March, 1993. A great aspect to Dennis Miller's comedy shows is that he rarely goes for the lowest common denominator. He regularly challenges his audience and punctuates points with obscure, idiosyncratic references, which only the most cultured are likely to always get. Add into the mix the fact that Miller's references are all 7 years old, and they become even more challenging.

It's always an interesting experience watching a comedy special, particularly one heavy in political content, from a number of years ago. It gives the audience an opportunity to see what was funny and topical then, and what still holds true today. Roughly half of Miller's 60 minute performance is still pretty funny and appropriate today. The other half, including miniature rants about Saddam Hussein, Admiral James Stockdale (remember him? He was Perot's running mate in 1992) and Charles Keating obviously feels dated. It is fun to hear his somewhat hopeful discussion of then newly-elected President Clinton, Hillary, Gore and "his new Attorney General" who strangely reminds him of "Lithgow in Garp." Especially in contrast to his currently espoused views on his weekly HBO show, he really has turned 180 degrees on Hillary.

While Miller does not appear to be truly "on" until the last third of his act, it's an enjoyable show for Miller fans. If you aren't yet a fan, this will not make you one...you would be better served checking out his weekly HBO show. This is not one of those great comedy specials like Eddie Murpy Delirious (or "Raw"), Eddie Izzard's "Dress to Kill" or Richard Pryor's "Live on the Sunset Strip" which can be watched over and over again. Therefore, I would recommend renting it over buying it, but if you are a Dennis Miller fan...check it out.

The Picture:
The film is offered in Full Screen presentation, although, because this is a comedy special, it doesn't make a difference. While Miller has a nice set, the action is almost entirely front and center.

The Sound:
While only offered in 2 Channel Dolby Surround Sound, this is more than adequate for the purposes of the comedy special. Miller is easy to hear and understand throughout the concert and the concert is almost entirely driven by his routine.

Extras:
The extras here are rather sparse. There is a feature allowing you to select from ten highlights from the concert, and they are adequately labeled to allow you to find the portion of the show you wish to go back to. Beyond There are also previews for Richard Pryor: Live on the Sunset Strip and "What Planet are you From." Again, however, with a concert DVD, one's expectations as to extras should be diminished.

As stated above, I would recommend renting this rather than buying it, but if you are a longtime fan of Dennis Miller, or of political comedy, check it out!
