The Movie:

I don't know what it is about "Magic Of Flight", but the majority of it failed to engage me. The film shows many events in the history of human flight, but revolves around the Blue Angels flight team as they prepare for their performances.

The film offers, as expected, stunning visual images as the planes attempt their spectacular flight sequences, but the film mainly attempts to show us images instead of providing much of a story. The interviews are moderately interesting, but mainly focus on what inspire them to go up in the planes time and time again.

For a film with so many amazing flight sequences, it's strange that the film seems to move at such a slow, relaxed pace. The only thing that really kept me from drifting was the occasional roar of a jet engine on the film's soundtrack. The narration by Tom Selleck is ok, but there really wasn't that much narration throughout the picture.

Watchable once, but not a favorite IMAX picture.

The DVD

VIDEO/AUDIO: Many of Image Entertainment's new IMAX DVDs offer a Dolby Digital and DTS audio track. On "Magic Of Flight", the differences between the two are somewhat noticable, with the DTS audio coming through as richer and more natural than the Dolby Digital version, which has a bit of a thin feel. The audio for "Magic Of Flight" is very good, although the material doesn't quite lend itself to consistently spectacular sound. When the documentary is focusing on the tricks and stunts that current planes are capable of, there are some very effective audio sequences, but otherwise, "Magic Of Flight" becomes basic. The film offers a very fun, bouncy score that livens up the scenes nicely, and has a very nice presence.

Really, the best thing to say about the audio for "Magic Of Flight" is to expect a pleasing, entertaining experience but don't go in expecting "Top Gun". There are a few stunning scenes, but the film as a whole isn't that way.

Video quality, as usual from Image Entertainment's IMAX titles, is uniformly very good. Images are consistently very sharp and take on a "three-dimensional" feel at times. Detail is good, as well. Colors on this particular release are gorgeous, with the deep blues of the airplanes standing out with bold authority.

MENUS:: Although the menus are not animated, they are easily navigated and offer the score from the movie playing in the background .

EXTRAS:

"The Making Of Magic Of Flight": As is the case sometimes with IMAX titles, the "making-of" documentary turns out to be more interesting in the film. In this case, the documentary offers interviews with the director and production crew; they offer quite a lot of information on the problems that arose during production, such as how exactly do they mount an enormous camera on a plane and keep control (as well as making sure there was no damage to the plane). It's a very good documentary that offers a lot of fascinating information; I found it a more interesting documentary than the feature. It even lasts longer than the feature, at 44 minutes.

Trailers: Trailers for "Dolphins", "Discoverers", "Magic Of Flight", "Stormchasers" and "The Living Sea"

Text Notes: Text notes about the director and how to do a science trick.

Final Thoughts: Not a bad movie, but pretty much just worth checking out as a rental. Audio/video quality is fine, and the documentary is, in my opinion, more enjoyable than the feature itself.
