Mighty Peking Man
List Price: Unknown [Buy now and save at Amazon]
A giant ape-like creature is brought to a large city where, after being mistreated, he runs amok, resulting in a climax where the ape ends up climbing a large building. Sound familiar? Sure, Mighty Peking Man may seem like a cheap knock-off to cash in on the remake of King Kong, and...well, it is, but this is a knock-off with heart. I actually prefer Mighty Peking Man to the De Laurentiis remake. Though the effects are third-rate, the constant use of rear projection laughable, and a constant sense of goofiness, Mighty Peking Man is a must-see for fans of schlock cinema.
Video: Though there are occassional specks and minor flaws in the source material for Mighty Peking Man, the quality of the video is light years beyond any version I've seen before. The colors are spectacularly vibrant, the image crystal clear, and the transfer is, thankfully, anamorphic. I was thrilled when I heard that Rolling Thunder was re-releasing Mighty Peking Man theatrically, and I'm equally thrilled that such care was taken to make sure it was well-represented visually on DVD.
Audio: Though not as impressive as the video, the audio on Mighty Peking Man doesn't disappoint. The English-dubbed audio track is free of hiss and distortion, and there's occassional subwoofer activity, though you'll have to turn it up to really feel any rumbling.
Extras: Aside from having another chance to see those traditionally-annoying trailers Disney adds before being able to access the main menu, the only extra is the theatrical trailer.
Conclusion: I definitely consider Mighty Peking Man to be a great movie to rent and watch really late one night with a group of friends. It's a lot of fun, but it's a little hard to recommend as a purchase for the casual viewer with a lack of extras and limited repeat viewing potential.
