Stay Tuned

Hey, every couple has problems, and Roy and Helen Knable's stumbling block is television. Roy is obsessed with TV, and when Helen takes her frustration out on the set, Roy inadvertently sells his soul for a new TV and satellite system. As a result, Roy and Helen find themselves trapped in Hellvision, where the survival rate is nearly nonexistent, for 24 hours. The question is -- will the viewer be able to survive 90 minutes of mostly-outdated pop-culture references?
Video: Another flawless transfer from Warner, Stay Tuned looks razor-sharp and thoroughly vibrant...absolutely no grain, a minimum of dust (I failed to notice any, actually). The transfer is anamorphic, with an aspect ratio of 2.35:1. Considering that Stay Tuned is a few years old, I'm very impressed with the end result. Even the featurette looks pretty good, which, considering its age as well, is a pleasant surprise.
Audio: Stay Tuned features a very nice 5.1 mix, free of hiss and distortion. The bass hits pretty hard, although it's used somewhat infrequently, and the very nice use of surrounds feels pretty enveloping.
Extras: A decent 6-minute behind-the-scenes featurette is included, along with the traditional cast/crew bios and a set of trailers.
Conclusion: A lot of the humor in Stay Tuned was hit-and-miss when it was released, and since so many of the jokes are pop-culture references rooted heavily in the very early '90s, much of the humor falls flat. Though I wouldn't recommend it as a purchase, the Chuck Jones segment alone makes it worth a rental.
