Golden Voyage of Sinbad, The

What's It All About?
A sailor on Sinbad's ship uses a Homonculus (okay, a homonculus is a flying Ray Harryhausen stop-motion creature) for target practice. When the sailor shoots an arrow at it, it drops a gold medallion onto the deck. Sindbad (John Phillip Law) decides to wear the medallion around his neck (like an albatros? wait, that's another story). When Sinbad turns in for the night he starts having strange dreams about an evil man and a woman with a tatooed palm. Hmm. Sinbad docks his ship and goes ashore where he encounters the evil Koura (Tom Baker) who just happens to be the strange man from Sinbad's dreams! Koura attempts to convince Sinbad to hand over the medallion but Sinbad decides to turn tail and run. He encounters the gold helmed Vizier who has a joining piece of the medallion. The Vizier explains that there is a third missing piece that when combined with the other two will grant great blessings to whoever throws the object into the Fountain of Destiny. Make sense so far? Sinbad later meets up with Margianna (Carolyn Munro) a slave girl with a tatooed palm, just like the dream! The group sets sail to get to the Fountain of Destiny before Koura!

How Does the DVD Look?
Columbia TriStar has taken this 1973 film and created a new anamorphic widescreen transfer. Typical of Columbia, the image is very good, being crisp and clean with vivid colors presented accurately. There is a fair amount of grain noticible especially in scenes that include Harryhausen effects. Overall this is a very good transfer especially for a 27 year old film. Also included is a full frame pan & scan version (yech!)

How Does the DVD Sound?
Presented in 2 channel mono, the sound is clear and the dialogue is clean and distinct.

Extras! Extras! Read All About 'Em!
Featurettes
"Mysterious Island", "The 3 Worlds of Gulliver", and "Earth vs. the Flying Saucers". These featurettes run about 10 minutes each and feature interviews with Ray Harryhausen, discussing his visual effects for each film.

Vintage Advertising
This is an interesting addition, showing posters, lobby cards and photes from the Golden Voyage.

Talent Files are also included as are English, Spanish, Portugese, Chinese, Korean and Thai subtitles and a Portugese language track.

Wrap Up:
This movie in not without it's story problems (if you haven't yet figured that out) but what you really watch for are Ray Harryhausen's stop-motion effects and in this department Golden Voyage delivers. Besides the previously mention Homonculus we are also treated to a one-eyed Centaur, a scary Griffen, a live masthead and the famous six-armed Kali statue. The movie is rated G so you can enjoy it with the kids without fear. I know my sons enjoyed it. Recommended!
