The Movie:
In this French drama-thriller Gerard Depardieu plays a priest / doctor who realizes that one of his patients has a twin sister with whom she shares a deep dark secret. The twins are Sister Sarah who is a nun in a monastary and the Gaëlle who is in prison. Both twins are played by the attractively down-to-earth looking Élodie Bouchez.

Gerard learns about one twin and then pursues the other one when he realizes that the only way he can save one is to save the other. The plot jumps all over the place to purposely throw us into the same confusion that Gerard's character feels as he confronts the problems of both women.

Director Graham Guit takes some plot points from movies such as Black Narcissus and Vertigo to create a good amount of tension. He also manages to get very good performances out of the leads. And from a technical point of view the film looks and sounds great but it all seems perhaps too cleverly contrived.

I'm not sure why the film received an extremely limited release because it is a good film even if the story is a bit weak toward the end. It builds for 90 minutes like a balloon and then deflates in seconds – but those first 90 minutes are above average.

How does it Look?
The film is presented 2.35:1 and looks excellent. The colors are strong and the image is sharp.

How does it Sound?
The film is presented Dolby 2.1 and is in French with many different subtitles.

Extras:
There is a very good Commentary Track by director Graham Guit and actress Élodie Bouchez that is in French with a subtitle option. It is particularly good because the two sort of interview each other and reveal things that they like and didn't like as well as what they felt comfortable with and what they didn't. The one thing I noticed was that while listening to the commentary track the subtitles for the commentary track occasionally are crossed over by the subtitles for the movie. It's sort of distracting if you don't know French – although their comments are italicized. The only other extra are three trailers one for this film and two for other films.

Overall:
The Pact of Silence is a fairly good film about twins who have a secret. It features fine performances and a good production design. The DVD looks and sounds great. Even though the film is not among the better foreign films of the year it still should be considered by fans of French cinema.
