What Planet are you From?
Synopsis:
Somewhere four Solar Systems away, a planet of men intent on conquering Earth are laying a master plan (no pun intended) if you will. Though technologically advanced by at least a thousand years, they have no…um-wedding tackle, rather, no meat & two veg (A La Austin Powers) you get my drift! Anyway, in order for them to successfully dominate Earth, one member of the planet has to come to Earth, impregnate a human female & bring the child back to the planet for reasons unknown. Gary Shandling is the selected "alien"-Harold Anderson. Once fitted with the latest in penile technology, he heads to Earth in search of ovulating, willing females. However, no amount of training or preparation could have readied him for the Human Female! As such, he has to contact his leader, Graydon (as played by Ben Kingsley) from time to time for answers to questions concerning the human mating/dating rituals of the planet. All the while he is being stalked by an FAA official (John Goodman) who believes Anderson to be an Alien & not a banker. Enter Leslie Hart (Annette Bening), she becomes Harold's primary love interest & the best chance at completing his mission. What planet are you from? Is an intensely funny film that not only looks closely at relationships but it does it in a way that's extremely well rounded & becomes an absolutely knock down comedy hit!
Audio:
The 5.1 audio platform is very nicely produced for the disc. There are enough quirky sound effects & aural textures to keep the surrounds & sub moving throughout the whole of the film. Most notably would be the "humming"! I can't go any further detail without spoiling the film. Trust me, the Humming is very well positioned within the front & rears! Overall the audio is pretty incredible & utilizes the soundstage to a great & enjoyable degree.
Video:
The video is an incredibly beautiful widescreen, artifact free anamorphic transfer that really sparkles! There were no mistakes in the transfer that I could notice. The colors are true with the blacks being incredibly rich & deep (*see the galaxy shots toward the end of the feature). The flesh tones were accurate & there was no bleeding of any kind. Beautiful transfer!
Extras:
The extras for the disc consist of a 10-minute featurette that contains brief interviews with the cast (Shandling, Fiorentino, Goodman & Benning) & the Director (Nichols) as well as showcasing some of the funnier moments of the feature. There are also roughly six trailers for features from some of the cast members as well as the trailer for the feature. They are in varying states decay for lack of a better term. The only trailers that were transferred from source materials that were well maintained were Men in Black & What Planet are you from? Wolf, Bugsy & the balance of the trailers while watchable are not nearly as clean as the previous two trailers. The menus are nicely animated but could have further benefited from the score playing over the menus as well as their continued animation. There is an isolated score for the film, which is also included & accessible from the special features menu. Lastly, the standard static production notes & talent files are included as well.
Overall:
This has to be one of the funniest movies I've seen all year! Gary Shandling is easily one of the most underrated comedians of our time! When you put him together with John Goodman & Ben Kingsley playing out of character I might add, you have an incredible recipe for comedy! What Planet are you from? Is a sleeper hit from 1999 that bears checking out. If you are in a relationship, contemplating one or have ever been in one, you'll find a lot to laugh at in this one! Highly recommended!
