The Movie:

This 6th disc is included as a bonus in the first 100,000 sets of the "Planet Of The Apes" Box set. It includes the 2 hour documentary, "Behind The Planet Of The Apes".

The documentary is excellent and one of the most comprehensive I've seen for a series of pictures, or simply a picture, for that matter. Hosted by Roddy McDowall, the documentary goes through almost everything one would want to know about the series. Interviews with the actors, photographs and other materials are put together to lead the viewer on a visual history of the "Planet Of The Apes".

Certainly many were reluctant to film a movie about "apes", as we learn here. We go behind the early history of the series, as the actors were gathered, the script was prepared from the novel, and the worries that arose during the pre-production phase of the film. The production phase is also covered, as we learn about all of the tests that had to be done so that the costumes wouldn't look laughable.

We also see the stress that the film's crew had to go through, with a limited production period, things had to be prepared and ready quickly, and things had to be created and new ground had to be broken on the fly as the team prepared. The story was also a problem; things had to be re-worked to keep costs down and we find here how that was done. It's also very impressive to see how the sets were produced and what was used to make them.

The documentary then asks, "what then?". It goes on to answer the question of how the filmmakers were able to go on to additional episodes of the series, and how they came up with the ideas and concepts to continue on. Additional problems with additional films in the series certainly arose, and they are covered in depth here.

For "Apes" fans, this is a wonderful look at the steps that had to be taken to bring this sci-fi classic to the screen, and how it continued on to sequels. The make-up process is shown here in especially informative detail, and the interviews are fun, too. The only thing that is sort of so-so with this final disc is that with the exception of trailers, this documentary is all there is on this DVD. It would have been nice if photos or storyboards or interviews or any other material had been included here.

But still, this limited edition(100,000) disc contains a great documentary that is definitely entertaining.

The video quality of the documentary is pretty solid; a little bit on the soft side at times, but certainly good. The documentary is presented in stereo, and sounds fine, as well.
