Stars: Janet Jackson
Rating: 4.8 out of 5 stars
Themes: live concert video

Since Janet is going to headline at the Super Bowl in Houston next month, I dropped the DVD of her most recent concert into the PlayStation (the regular DVD had a brain fart and died) to see a little preview.

And let me tell you, Janet Jackson gives one great live show. She dances, she sings, she pulls her fans on stage for the most intimate of performances and she definitely gives all the young Janet wannabes -- the Britney, Myas, Christinas and Ashantis -- a lesson in how to do it.

This video debuted at No. 1 on Billboard's video charts, just as the single and album hit No. 1 on their respective charts as well.

The video is taken from an HBO live concert that still stands as one of the net's top 10 all time live concerts (Jackson actually has two of them; the Velvet Rope tour being the other).

Janet may be one of the 20 or so most beautiful celebrities on terra firma, but she's not afraid to work herself into a sweaty mess for your pleasure.

She begins the show with a medley of her most recent hits, then touches on all her past ones, something that Madonna failed to do in her most recent show.

Then she launches into a bump and grind song called "Would You Mind" where she's in tight black leather, head-to-toe, looking like Carrie Anne Moss could only dream of.

She straps down a lucky fan to a freaky looking table and gives him the most public hand job and lap dance anyone has ever seen. It's all simulated, but you can see where Britney's stealing her ideas from.

The DVD includes five more Would You Mind episodes from five different cities and that alone would be worth the price of admission. Just watching these guys lose all manner of control when Janet, well, you've just got to see this video for yourself.

Britney never gets this close to her fans and with a split second or two nipple flash to start the video, some near-nude backstage changing scenes plus a damn good two-hour concert, Janet delivers the goods, for the raincoaters and the mainstream crowd.

She sweats for the whole show, and sings a few tracks live and the precision of her show is what is so effective. Unlike many acts today, she is not going through the motions, but seems bent on providing fans -- who've forked out as much as 80 bucks per person -- something that they won't forget.

And let me tell you, the men who she brings up on stage for the one number, well, they'll never ever forget Miss Janet thrusting her sweet thing in their faces and giving them the burlesque show of their lives.
