THE DVD

When I think of the name Playboy, I think of very attractive women and a very slickly produced magazine. So when I picked up a copy of Playboy's Casting Calls 3, I was expecting the same kind of slickness and professionalism in their DVD presentations. Sadly, the Playboy Empire has a long way to go when it comes to the digital format.

The girls are cute enough, but the DVD doesn't offer much more than the standard videotape. The video and audio are both below-average, and there are no extras…nary a one! More about that a little later in this review, but for now, here's what to expect in this title:

The presentation is broken down in to a bunch of short segments featuring girls who are, for the most part, brand-new to nude modeling. There are two kinds of segments here – those involving photo shoots with a Playboy photographer, and home video submissions sent to the company by centerfold-wannabes. While watching the girls pose probably isn't nearly as eye-appealing as the final photographs will be, I did like the way the title gave us a behind-the-scenes look at how such photoshoots take place. Notice how the photographer goes out of his way to make the girls feel comfortable and constantly flatters them about how sexy they look in front of the camera.

Perhaps even more interesting to watch were the home video submissions, since these are girls trying to impress Playboy enough that they'll get a call from the magazine to come in and pose for them. Some of these ladies are knockouts, some are average looking, but all of them have a sense of freedom about their sexuality that I wish I saw more of in the average American woman…then again, maybe I'm hanging out with the wrong crowd – or maybe I'm just not the kind of person to garner such activity!

So, simply judging the DVD by the material presented in the presentation, this is a semi-enjoyable watch. However, the disc has other problems which really lower it's recommendation value, so let's get into those now…

THE DVD

Video
Presented full-frame, the video is grainy, lacks a good deal of color, and basically looks like VHS…really old VHS! I can understand why the home video material looks bad…but the video shoot material looks just as bad! Once again, not the kind of quality I was expecting from Playboy.

Audio
Presented in 2.0 Dolby, the sound is somewhat muffled and can be downright "scratchy" at times. You can still hear what the girls are saying, and I'm not sure how important audio is on a title such as this one…but still, this is pretty below-average stuff for a DVD release.

Extras:
"Play Movie" and "Chapter Selection"…that's the extent of work Playboy has put into this DVD. There are no extras to be found. No bonus footage, no additional interview material, no trailers for other Playboy titles…heck, they didn't even front-load some ads onto this DVD! In other words, the amount of extras on this disc equals the amount of dates I've had so far this year: donut!

THE BOTTOM LINE

I'll be honest with you – the content of the presentation was interesting enough to me that I probably would have given this one a "Rent It" recommendation. However, with such poor A/V quality and no extras, I wouldn't have a clear conscience giving this anything higher than "Skip It". Maybe someone will get the word to Playboy and they will start putting a little more effort into their DVD releases.
