The Movie

Theatrical Release Date: November 1, 1996

Run Time: 1 Hour 52 Minutes

After small time con man Tom Turner (Greg Kinnear) is arrested for fraud he's forced to hold a regular 9 to 5 job for a year or he's off to prison. Through his cousin Guy (Timothy Stack) Turner gets his first regular job working at the postal office. Here he gets assigned as a holiday temp working in the Dead Letter Office. The Dead Letter Office is responsible for tracking and sorting mail sent that has no true destination. Here Turner finds an opportunity for the con of a lifetime. Part of the Dead Letter Office involves a storage room for parcels, some valuable that don't get sent out. Eventually these items are auctioned off. However Turner owing a loan shark a thousand dollar gambling debt, he sees this as his perfect money making opportunity.

After his boss Herman Dooly (Tim Conway) catches him stuffing valuables in his pockets, he claims he's found the right destination for the valuables. He then puts everything in his pockets in a priority envelope and sends them off to the "right" destination. Meanwhile he accidentally sends his first paycheck to the address. After tracking town the package he finds that the poor people who received the money were overjoyed to hear their prayers answered. Turner then leaves the money with them as he has a slight change of heart.

During which a fellow co-worker Rebecca Frazen (Laurie Metcalf) witnesses the exchange. Rebecca a former lawyer who went a little crazy before joining the post office, becomes intrigued with the idea of doing good and answering God's mail. She gets the others in the Dead Letter Office involved and they embark in becoming the God Squad. At first Turner doesn't want to be involved, but later he changes his mind with the intent to prove to his love interest Gloria McKinney (Maria Pitillo) that he isn't a bad guy. Turner ends up leading the so-called God Squad in their endeavors to create miracles.

The DVD

Spoken Languages: English, French

Non-Spoken Languages: English

Video:
The video is presented in anamorphic 1:85 ratio widescreen color. The picture is fairly good, but there are slightly noticeable color defects and the picture is a little grainy. However these issues with the picture quality do not interfere with the viewing of the feature.

Sound:
The audio is presented in English 5.1 Dolby Digital surround sound, along with both English and French 2.0 Dolby Digital surround sound. The sound is quite good all dialogue can be easily heard throughout the feature with the exception of one character, Whispering Wendy. You're not actually supposed to really understand what's she's saying, because she's Whispering Wendy.

Subtitles:
The subtitles are presented in the English language and stay in sync with the English dialogue throughout the feature. The subtitles appear over the picture and are easily read, nor do they interfere with the feature itself.

Extras:
There aren't any extras in this DVD, nor is there even an insert!

Final Thoughts:
I don't think this movie had a chance. While there are definitely a few laughs here, the bottom line is that it's not a great film. Don't get me wrong I really like Greg Kinnear, but I just didn't like this movie. The premise of a con-man turned good-doer, while highly unlikely (but still possible) just didn't make for a great film. Kinnear's character Turner in the film was also supplemented with a lot of neurotic characters in the feature, which I suppose was added for humor, but I failed to see it. Overall this movie is less than entertaining. Perhaps I'm being a little mean, but like I said earlier there are a few laughs in this film. So if you're really interested it's not a bad rental, then again it's not the best either.
