Noragami, otherwise known as Stray God when translated, was one of the most talked about anime of 2014, and for good reason. The show was such a success in it's debut that a sequel series, Noragami: Aragato, was quickly green-lit in Japan, and ended up in one of FUNimation's recent broadcast dubs lineups. Featuring the directorial debut of Kotaro Tamura, who has worked on Mamoru Hosada's brilliant film Wolf Children, and other acclaimed works such as Baccano! and Michiko & Hatchin, Noragami is a 12 episode series about a god of war from ages ago who has lost his way, and is determined to scratch and claw his way back into prominence and fame by taking on odd jobs around Tokyo.

Noragami follows the story of Yato (voiced by Jason Liebrecht), a minor god who is down on his luck that dreams of having his own temple so that a...Read the entire review

Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection F Theatrical https://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/review/69513 Thu, 13 Aug 2015 18:28:42 UTC Highly Recommended

The Movie:
NOTE: This film was reviewed through a theatrical screener that included FUNimation's English dub only.

The Dragon Ball franchise is a juggernaut in the anime fandom, a franchise that has spawned 600 plus episodes over the course of multiple series' (including one new television series that's currently airing), over 20 movies and TV specials, dozens of video games, trading cards, apparel. Etc. Dragon Ball is simply a cultural phenomenon.

Back in 2013, for one reason or another, Akira Toriyama decided to revisit the characters that made him so famous with the theatrically released film, Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods. After the immense success of the film, Toei likely threw as much money possible at Toriyama to continue with another film, thus we have Resurrection F, which is being released stateside mere months after its theatrical release in Japan...Read the entire review

Blazblue: Alter Memory - The Complete Series (Blu-ray) Blu-ray https://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/review/68761 Thu, 30 Jul 2015 00:02:10 UTC Rent It

If history has taught anime fans anything, it's that video game to anime adaptions are extremely hard to successfully pull off. Devil May Cry was just ok, Sengoku Basara was solid for the most part, but it didn't fully live up to its potential. The Final Fantasy and Star Ocean anime are just best not talked about.Blazblue: Alter Memory, based off of the 2 entries of the franchise, Calamity Trigger and Continuum Shift, somehow falls into every category above. At times it's ok, even good, other times, it's nothing more than an incoherent mess and a waste of time.

When I first learned about Nobunagun, I was honestly pretty excited about it. It seemed to have a fantastic premise with characters having the DNA of famed historical figures, and the voice cast was pretty stellar. Then I read the reviews for it... I'd say "tepid" would be a kind word for it. There are a lot of 2 - 2 1/2 star reviews out there and of course like my own, they're entitled to their opinions. However, most reviews I've read approached Nobunagun like it's a serious show, when you should take this show at total face value. There's almost no depth to it, and it's simply a nonstop balls to the wall action thrill ride from start to finish.

The series starts off circa the 1500's in Japan following the exploits of one Oda Nobunaga (voiced here by Kent Williams.) For those of you who do not know who the real life Oda Nobunaga is, he was one of the most feared s...Read the entire review

Solty Rei is a title I've heard quite a bit about over the past few years with most people telling me it's s hidden gem that flew under the radar. Maison Close (which translates to "Closed House") is a series that most probably never heard of. It's a steamy French series in the same vain of Fifty Shades of Grey but with much more substance. Despite the accolades the show received, the acclaim and the awards, the series was cancelled after only 16 episodes due to lackluster ratings. With the series being released stateside with the hopes of a broader audience, this box set contains the first 8 episodes of the series. Is the show worth a look?

Taking place in Paris circa 1871, briefly after the rise and fall of the Paris Commune (which was an uprising from the working class trying to claim power), Maison Close revolves around the life of a collection of prostitutes in a fancy brothel called "Paradise", a high end bordello known as the best around, only frequented by the upper class of society.

When I had first seen some screen caps for Coppelion, I was blown away. The sad thing is though, is that apocalyptic anime are extremely hard to pull off correctly, with Now and Then, Here and There being the only one I seen that I'd consider excellent. There were others that I'd call above average like Blue Gender and Desert Punk, others never rise above mediocrity like Casshern Sins, and some are below par like the title in question, Coppelion.

The series opens up with us meeting Holly (Played by Kristen Johnston), a divorce attorney who is showing one of her more recent clients, Stuart (played by David Alan Basche), a needy do-gooder, to a shared apartment for him to start his life anew. Dumped by their wives, Holly took pity on these guys and sublets an extra apartment that she owns across the hall from her own. It's here that we meet the other bachelors, we have ladies man Phil (played by Donald Faison, Scrubs), who in every single episode can found playing a game of "Bang and Boot" with a different...Read the entire review

Cowboy Bebop: The Complete Series (Blu-ray) Blu-ray https://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/review/65491 Sat, 03 Jan 2015 19:35:38 UTC DVD Talk Collector Series

Content:
Every so often comes along a series that I'm somewhat nervous to tackle, not because of any backlash I might receive from the fandom, but because I want to give a series that deserves so much respect its due justice. So I'm going to start this review off by getting right to the point... Regardless of the medium, be it live action television, film, or animation, Cowboy Bebop is simply one of the finest examples of storytelling ever created.

When the much discussed topic of "What is the best anime ever made?" comes up, chances are the general consensus will say Shinichiro Watanabe's masterpiece, Cowboy Bebop, a series about a group of ragtag bounty hunters that come together and will at that at first glance seem like just a typical episodic anime, don't let that fool you, it's much much more. Cowboy Bebop focuses on the adventures of the ultra-cool Spike...Read the entire review

Reign: Season 1 DVD Video https://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/review/65556 Sat, 03 Jan 2015 13:53:47 UTC Rent It

Content:
I'm a fan of period pieces. Honestly, I find them to be just a huge blast to watch and riveting television for the most part, but I'm going to say this right off the bat, If you're a history buff, you're probably going to hate Reign, just throw any preconceived notions you have about the show straight out the window. so when I first heard about Reign, I was pretty excited, however that came to a screeching halt when I heard that it was on The CW, a channel that can't seem to get any show right. I am NOT a fan of the CW... at all. While I do love Arrow, the interference from CW irritates me to no end, it could be amazing had it been on a premium network. The same problems in that show are apparent here and make no mistake about it, this is a angst laden soap opera that just has a historical setting. The premise of Reign is that Mary, Queen of Scots returns...Read the entire review

Extant: The Complete First Season (Blu-ray) Blu-ray https://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/review/66053 Tue, 30 Dec 2014 06:03:35 UTC Rent It

Content:
"I went to space on a 13-month solo mission. I didn't come home alone. My husband created a life-like android called a "Humanich". His name is Ethan: he's the prototype. This is a story about Earth, a story about family, a story about surviving." Produced by master filmmaker Steven Spielberg and backed with the star power of Oscar winner Halle Berry, along with a brilliant story concept, comes Extant, a series that questions the human race and extraterrestrial/artificial life.

Let's be honest here, the hook and reason you're here is Halle Berry in space, right? She's a mega star and quite honestly I thought I'd never see the day where she ended up on a "bridge" summer CBS program. If you're simply here for Halle Berry in space... well you're probably going to be somewhat disappointed, a very small fraction of this series actually takes place in space, unfortunately....Read the entire review

Certain Magical Index II: Season 2 - Part 2 (Blu-ray) Blu-ray https://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/review/65937 Sun, 28 Dec 2014 16:15:04 UTC Recommended

Content: A couple of months ago I was lucky enough to review the collection sets for A Certain Scientific Railgun S, a franchise I wasn't too familiar with outside of it's immense popularity here in the states. Despite my starting to watch this in it's 3rd season, I was hooked and immediately sought out the first two seasons and immersed myself into the Raildex universe, falling in love with the well written characters, fun stories and doses of comedy injected in to keep things light. How does Season 2 fare to past installments to the franchise?

If you've watched the first season then don't expect anything different from the format here as it's pretty much the same. Several different story arcs loosely tied together with one another and the occasional filler episode thrown in-between. For those who do not know the setup to Index, I'll give a quick rundown...

A Certa...Read the entire review
