This Week's Notable DVDs (11/25-12/1)

Here's a quick wrap up of some of the DVD titles just announced by studios: Universal has announced the DVD release for one of our very favorite films of 2003 Lost in Translation on 3/3 [Review], artfully directed by Sofia Coppola with a near perfect performance by Bill Murray, Warner Bros. has My Fair Lady: 2 Disc Special Edition on 2/3 - the next title in their popular two disc classic film restoration line, Columbia Tri-Star has The Critic: The Entire Series on 1/27 starring a very animated Jon Lovitz and produced by the same team that does The Simpsons, New Yorker has The Stone Reader on 2/10 [Review], a hidden gem documentary that captures the love and passion people have for books, and Artisan has the video game turned movie House of the Dead on 1/27. DVD Savant: La Strada, Looney Tunes and The Serpent and the Rainbow
This week the DVD Savant takes a look La Strada - Savant thought he'd seen it too many times, but it never looked or sounded as good as this, Pale Flower - Masahiro Shinoda's ode to nihilism is a yakuza noir, Lianna - John Sayles is back with another impressive, superior independent film from the 80s, Pretty Baby- A masterpiece Savant never saw, a censorship-blind look at prostitution eighty years ago with child actress Brooke Shields in the middle of it all. What Have I Done to Deserve This? - Pedro Almodóvar gives us the ultimate dysfunctional family, The Serpent and the Rainbow - Wes Craven's most worthwhile horror effort is a classy trip into terror via Hatian voodoo, The Solid Gold Cadillac - Judy Holliday shines in this early critique of corporate chicanery and Looney Tunes Premiere Collection - 28 of Termite Terrace's finest, this splinter collection of cartoons is a good cross-section of Warners fun. This Week's Notable DVDs (11/18-11/24)
This week there's no more notable DVD than the highly anticipated Lord of the Rings - The Two Towers (Extended Edition) which adds a whopping 43 minutes of new material to the already epicly proportioned film. If you're looking for something more family friendly Dreamworks has Sinbad - Legend of the Seven Seas which got overlooked in theaters and is definitely worth checking out on DVD, Columbia Tri-Star has the beautiful Winged Migration with a great behind the scenes doc that shows you exactly how they got so close to those birds, Paramount has Sergio Leone's Once Upon a Time in the West and we've got a fantastic look at it from The DVD Savant. From Plexifilm comes Gigantic: A Tale of Two Johns a gigantic DVD for a fascinating band, and Warner Bros. has the extremely popular The West Wing - Season 1 a definite purchase for fans of the show.

Here's a quick wrap up of some of the DVD titles just announced by studios: From Columbia Tri-Star comes the fantastic documentary Spellbound on 1/20 [Review] a remarkable look at the National Spelling Bee that should not be missed. Another great film for the entire family comes from New Line who will release Secondhand Lions on 2/3 as the newest member of their New Line Platinum Series. The curious will want to see Meg Ryan's career reboot with the steamy In The Cut on 2/3 [Review] it's not a great movie but it's interesting to see Ryan shed her good girl image. Fox has announced Lucia, Lucia on 1/13 more evidence of the Renaissance in Latin cinema. and finally from Warner Bros. comes the DVD release for Gilligan's Island - The Complete First Season on 2/3 - what started out as a three hour tour is now a three DVD box set! DVD Savant: Once Upon a Time in the West and The Dick Van Dyke Show
This week the DVD Savant takes a look at the highly anticipated release from Paramount of Sergio Leone's Once Upon a Time in the West. There's a lot to be said and argued about Once Upon a Time in the West and Savant goes to town on it. Savant also takes a look at Image's release for The Dick Van Dyke Show, Seasons One and Two - an example of what Smart and Funny was like in '62, Warner Bros. release of High Sierra a classic that made Humphrey Bogart a mainstream star, Criterion's Le Cercle rouge. a stylized and ritualized continental criminal epic that crime fans will love and Columbia TriStar's The World of Apu, the honored Indian masterpiece which is an excellent movie on a less than excellent DVD. DVD Talk Interview - Actor Geoffrey Rush
Geoffrey Rush rocketed to success in 1996 with his brilliant Oscar award winning performance as Pianist David Helfgott in the critically acclaimed film Shine. Since then he has had an amazing string of performances acting with Cate Blanchett, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Winslet, Salma Hayek, Johnny Depp and a little clown fish called Nemo. We had the opportunity to talk to Geoffrey Rush just as the Finding Nemo DVD was hitting stores and just a month before the Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl hit DVD. Rush talks about his experience being an animated character in Nemo, working with Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean and his next project The Life of Death of Peter Sellers. This Week's Notable DVDs (11/11-11/17)
He said he'd be back... and so now he is: T3: Rise of the Machines [Review] leads off this week's notable DVD, with what might be the last of the Terminator DVD releases. If you can't get enough of Arnold then you can get a double dose by checking out Pumping Iron- The 25th Anniversary Special Edition. Disney has an extremely notable DVD/Game release this week with Lilo & Stitch's Island of Adventures Game [Review] - a surprisingly fun game that might just be hint of things to come. Criterion finally brings the completely strange David Cronenberg film Naked Lunch on to DVD, and Buena Vista has the easy to miss but equally notable Gerry from Gus Van Sant. Finally, to commemorate the anniversary of JFK's assassination Warner Bros has the 2 disc JFK :Special Edition - often argued about by critics, it still is one to catch.

DVD Savant: To Have and Have Not, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Dragonslayer
This week the DVD Savant takes a look at Warners' To Have and Have Not with star appeal at its best, a romantic couple famous for pairing up offscreen during the making of the movie, Fox's Studio Classics presentation of The Ox-Bow Incident proves that the studio doesn't play around with the cream of its library, A Christmas Wish a film really irks Savant as it's a remarketed, retitled, colorized bit of subterfuge. MGM's llavish Special Edition of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, a film Savant grudgingly admits is some kind of a children's classic, even though it drives him up the wall, Paramount's beautifully transferred Dragonslayer, the handsome return of giant stop-motion monsters to the screen courtesy of ILM's animator Phil Tippett and Kino's The Man Who Laughs which is the best silent film Savant's seen in ages! Here's a quick wrap up of some of the DVD titles just announced by studios: Fox has the much buzzed about Alien Quadrilogy Box Set on 12/9 which DOES include the Director's cut of Alien [Review] now in theaters, Columbia Tri-Star has Underworld on 1/6 [Review] - yes Kate Beckinsale looks great in leather but the movie pales in comparison to many of the great vampire flicks already on DVD, HBO has the controversial Capturing the Friedmans on 1/27 with a ton of extra content that gives even more fuel to the argument over what exactly happened and American Splendor on 2/3 [Review] one of the most innovative bio-pics we've ever seen, and certainly one of the best films of 2003! MGM has Rain Man: Special Edition on 2/3 with the key feature being a Barry Levinson's audio commentary and Buena Vista has Spy Kids 3D on 2/24 complete with several pairs of 3D glasses.
