2003 A Year Full of Talk
Over the past year we did a lot of talking with Actors, Producers, and Directors all about DVD. Here are some of the most notable DVD Interviews which appeared on DVD Talk This Year: Survivor host and Director of the indie film Finder's Fee Jeff Probst, Sci-Fi Author Neil Gaiman on the miniseries Neverwhere, Director John Singleton on the special edition release of Boyz 'N The Hood, Rob Zombie on House of 1000 corpses, Spike Lee on 25th Hour, Actor Robert Forster on the indie film Diamond Men, Actor/Comedian Eddie Izzard on his concert film Circle, Finding Nemo's Austin Pendleton and Geoffrey Rush, legend R. Lee Ermey on his role in Willard and Mail Call, and Blade II/Hellby Director Guillermo Del Toro on his debut film Chronos. Find all these interviews and more in our DVD Interview Section.

This Week's Notable DVDs (12/30-1/6)
It's the last week of 2003, but the year isn't over just yet for notable DVDs including: S.W.A.T. [Review] - Colin Farrell, Samuel L. Jackson, Michelle Rodriquez and LL Cool J all deliver in a light but likeable action flick. If you're a fan of action films be sure not to miss So Close [Review] - think "Asian Charlie's Angels." All notable trilogies must come to an end, and in this case the only rings we're talking about are wedding rings in American Wedding: Unrated Extended Party Edition [Review] - while not as funny as the second "Pie", it does have a few strong laughs and is worth renting if you're a fan of the series. Another series winding its way down to the end is the ever popular: Sex and the City - The Complete Fifth Season [Reviews of Previous Seasons] a real treat for fans of the show. Finally, something completely different: Northfork [Review] - an unusual and stylized film with very fine performances, while not for everyone, it's a film worth checking out. Read our Complete List of Upcoming DVDs.

Come swim against the mainstream in a thrilling odd-yssey through the year's finest fringe cinema releases -- including the reader-voted CineSchlockers' Choice for THE top genre DVD of 2003!!! Just Announced DVDs
2004 is already shaping up to be a great year for DVD and this week we've got another round of DVD announcements to get excited about: First up is City of God on 2/17 - a film which has made many of the nation's critic top ten lists this year, is up for a Golden Globe and almost assuredly an Oscar nomination in the best Foreign Film category. Paramount has announced School Of Rock on 3/2 [Review] including audio commentary with Jack Black and Director Richard Linklater, it should be a blast. New Line Home Entertainment has The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: 2 Disc Special Edition on 3/30 - this much talked about remake is now set to be a whopper of a DVD. Warner Bros. has The Chaplin Collection, Vol. 2 on 3/2 including the classic Chaplin films - City Lights, The Circus, The Kid, A King in New York, A Woman of Paris, Monsieur Verdoux and The Chaplin Revue. Finally, from Universal comes word of The Rundown on 3/23 -a fun summer action flick that was actually released in the fall. Read our complete list of Upcoming DVDs.

The Future of DVD - A Look Back
One of the major issues addressed in 2004 will be - what's next for DVD? In 2003 the stage was set for a massive format war over the next generation for DVD (HD-DVD). Earlier this year we attended the DVD in 50 Conference where we got a good look at the lay of the land for the future of DVD. In early January many of the players will be officially throwing their hat in the HD-DVD ring at CES (Consumer Electronic Show) including: Sony's Blue-Ray, Microsoft's Windows Media 9 and the DVD Forum's 'approved' format - Advanced Optical Disc 'AOD'. If you're interested in the future of DVD, then take a look back at this years landmark event.

Cinema Gotham: Top 10 New York Related DVDs
Cinema Gotham Top 10 DVDs of 2003 Another year goes by, another chance to look back. This year instead of the usual general top 10 we decided to do a Cinema Gotham top 10, which turned out to be tougher than we thought (We tried to find a local connection in The Two Towers but just couldn't do it.) Limiting the list to films that were covered here or that were about New York stories caused some tossing and turning and hemming and hawing. But ultimately you could do worse than the ten discs we came up with. From shorts to documentaries, classics and recent releases (plus Spike Lee's second number one finish in three years) it's been a wildly diverse year. Read Cinema Gotham's Top 10 DVDs of 2003 and don't miss The Official DVDTalk Top 20 DVDs of 2003

The Aisle View: Cold Mountain, Big Fish and Paycheck
One winner and three losers arrive in theaters Christmas Day and The Aisle View has a look at all of them: Aisle view critic Megan Denny applauds Tim Burton's latest outing, Peter Pan adaption spares the audience from torturous musical numbers, but ultimately is no better than any of the nine other film versions of the classic children's tale. Paycheck, the new John Woo film about a man who must piece together the last three years of his life and save the world using only some paper clips and a bus ticket is a great idea for a film, but is unwatchable due to the lackluster performance of Ben Affleck. Finally, the long-awaited adaptation of the best-selling novel Cold Mountain turns out to be one of the biggest disappointments of the year due to a lack of chemistry between the main characters. This Week's Notable DVDs (12/23-12/30)
A much more anemic week for notable DVDs as we begin to round out the year with a much heavier focus on titles that people are more likely to rent than buy: Jeepers Creepers 2 [Giveaway] - perhaps not as solid as the first chapter in this horror series, but a good rental if you're in the mood for some light horror, L'Auberge Espagnole (The Spanish Apartment) [Review] - A likable, sweet film that's entertaining and involving but with far to little of screen gem Audrey Tautou, Alex & Emma [Review - Luke Wilson and Kate Hudson star in a Rob Reiner film that is certainly no 'When Harry Met Sally', Anything Else [Review] Jason Biggs and Christina Ricci star in a tepid Woody Allen film that just can't deliver, The Medallion [Review] - another in a long line of recent Jackie Chan movies that are only merit a rental rating. Read our Complete List of Upcoming DVDs.

DVD Savant: The Rolling Stones Four Flicks
This week the DVD Savant has a look at the Best Buy exlcusive release for The Rolling Stones Four Flicks - a loaded boxed set with enough goodies to satisfy any Stones fan, Heat and Dust - one of Merchant-Ivory's best, this story of British women in India contrasts two experiences in decades 60 years separate , Hell's Angels on Wheels- Richard Rush goes biker-crazy in this early Hell's Angels - approved rev 'n' rumble saga starring Jack Nicholson, and My House in Umbria - starring Maggie Smith this HBO film is a visual and dramatic delight. Read all this and more in this week's DVD Savant.

Just Announced DVDs
Some interesting DVDs announced this week including: the Irish import Ordinary Decent Criminal on 1/13 starring Kevin Spacey, Linda Fiorentino and Colin Farrell in a likeable caper, Mike Figgis' semi-suspenseful Cold Creek Manor on 3/2 [Review] with Sharon Stone and Dennis Quaid, the over-the-top Matrixesque Japanese action flick The Returner on 2/10 [Trailer], Just One Of The Guys on 2/24 - the 80's comedy which has the distinction of being on the CineSchlock-O-Rama Most Wanted List and finally in addition to Schindler's List on 3/9 universal has announced the release for the five-part Steven Spielberg / Shoah Visual History Foundation TV Documentary Broken Silence on 3/9 which explores the horrific experience of the Holocaust as told by its Survivors. Read our complete list of Upcoming DVDs.

Hidden Gems - Films Not To Overlook
With so many major DVD releases out this season, it's extremely easy to overlook great 'Hidden Gems' on DVD, so here are several we suggest you seek out: So Close - a Chinese martial arts film, kind of an Asian "Charlie's Angels," but more fun and innovative, Off The Charts -a documentary about odd people who write lyrics and have them produced as songs, MI-5: Volume 1 - this BBC series is one of the best surprises of the year, Gerry - Gus Van Sant's prelude to Elephant is as inventive as it is beautiful, Wild Zero - the best Japanese rock-and-roll zombie splatter-comedy fat-packed with action on the market today, Melvin Goes to Dinner the directorial debut of Mr Show's Bob Odenkirk is very entertaining and very highly recommended, Wire in the Blood: Mermaids Singing- a psychological thriller that will keep you glued to your set.

DVD Talk Interview: Gary Ross - Writer & Director of Seabiscuit
It's never an easy task bringing a best selling book to the screen, but that task is made even harder when the best selling book comes out less than a year before the release of the film. Writer/Director Gary Ross rose to the challenge and adapted Laura Hillenbrand's best selling book Seabiscuit: An American Legend into one of this year's best films. Ross' not only captured the essence of the book on screen, he helped breath life into the characters of Seabiscuit by bringing on some amazing actors including Jeff Bridges, Chris Cooper, William H. Macy and Tobey Maguire. We had an opportunity to talk to Gary Ross just as the Seabiscuit DVD was being released. Read our complete interview with Gary Ross. The Aisle View: Stuck on You
Who would have guessed the Farrelly brothers would ever make a film that could be described as "sweet" and "cute"? Also in this week's Aisle View column, critic Megan Denny confesses her love for actress Scarlett Johansson but cannot find similar affection for Johansson's latest film, Girl with a Pearl Earring. Speaking of films quickly in and out of theaters, Sylvia comes to DVD on 2/10 with Gwyneth Paltrow's portrayal of author and poet Sylvia Plath, the film got very mixed reviews theatrically and is a 'love it or hate it' kind of film.
