Anime Talk: Akira Kurosawa's Samurai 7, Fire & Ice and Gankutsuou
This week in Anime Talk our newest reviewer, Todd Douglass, tells us the top five things he loves and hates about the anime industry today. Lilo and Stitch Hit Oahu
To promote the straight-to-DVD release of Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch Has a Glitch, the sequel to the successful animated feature from 2002, writers and voice cast gathered on Oahu's North Shore for a luau celebration. BendFilm 2005 Preview
Many of the films we saw and loved at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival have found their way to your local multiplex (including Hustle and Flow, Me You and Everyone We Know and The Aristocrats). Some of the Sundance slate is now on DVD ( including Rory O'Shea Was Here, Layer Cake and 3 Iron). There are however, a group of fantastic films which can only be seen on the festival circuit. BendFilm 2005 captures these hidden gems from Sundance and combines them with a slate of films including gems from the Tribecca, Slamdance and Newport film festivals. Running from September 22-25 BendFilm is a relatively new entry to the festival scene, located in the majestic resort town of Bend, Oregon, it hopes to make its mark as one of the premiere fiercely independent film festivals in the country. Silent DVD: The SlapHappy Collection
This month Silent DVD has an in depth look at the SlapHappy series as well as the latest news on some upcoming releases. SlapHappy gives an excellent overview of silent comedies and comedians. Not only do they cover the big names from the era, Chaplin, Keaton, and Lloyd, but they also feature a large number of talented comics who are now all but forgotten. Lupino Lane, Larry Semon, Max Linder, Lloyd Hamilton and Snub Pollard are only some of the comics that are covered in the show. There is an overview of the entire series with links to full reviews of all ten volumes, and an interview with Larry Stefan, the producer, writer, and pretty much the driving force behind the series. Speaking of slapstick comedy, The Harold Lloyd Comedy Collection is scheduled to be released in time for Christmas. We have cover art as well as a list of films that are going to be included in this long awaited set. DVD Savant: Major Dundee, The Silent Star and The Thin Man
This week the DVD Savant has a number of new reviews including: Major Dundee - The Extended Version - Savant doesn't review his favorite film, he writes a book. Those readers not already absolute Peckinpah fanatics can check out the details on Sony's disc extras, but the joy of this obsession is really getting into the mystery; The Silent Star - First Run Features comes up with a subtitled disc of the original East German-Polish version we saw here as First Spaceship on Venus; Curly Top - Shirley Temple burst off the screen to lighten the hearts of the unemployed Americans of 1935; The Complete Thin Man Collection - Taken as a bunch, the films are like a miniseries that took 13 years to play out, but Myrna Loy we can watch forever; The Barkleys of Broadway - The final Astaire & Rogers film is an MGM Technicolor show made ten years down the line, and not quite the same experience as the earlier pictures. DVD Savant: Boudu Saved from Drowning, Swing Time, Borsalino & Co.
This week the DVD Savant has a number of new reviews including: Boudu Saved from Drowning - Jean Renoir's breezy fable takes exception to common notions of goodwill and gratitude; Follow the Fleet - this Fred & Ginger romp has plenty of great dancing but doesn't gel into romantic bliss; Story of a Prostitute - Seijun Suzuki makes another taboo subject into an exceptional film. Swing Time - George Stevens takes a spin with Astaire and Rogers; Shall We Dance - Ballet star Astaire woos Broadway entertainer Rogers on a madcap ocean cruise; Borsalino and Co. - Alain Delon presides over this violent sequel to the original gangster-chic Marseilles-based original film, a bloodbath of tommyguns and bloody vendettas. Anime Talk: Samurai Gun, Kakurenbo and Anime Bargains
Anime Talk has an early look at a new series; the ultra-violent Samurai Gun. We also have the low down on an OVA that promises to make you sleep with the lights on: Kakurenbo: Hide and Seek. Not everything was good though. Peacemaker continues its fast decline with volume 6, and Mobile Suit Gundam Seed: Movie 1: The Empty Battlefield turns an excellent series filled with political maneuvering into a disappointing series of flashy battle scenes. DVD Savant - The High and The Mighty, Secret Garden and Jubal
