TV on DVD Reviews: Boondocks, Dog Whisperer, and Sgt. Bilko
Some great TV on DVD releases reviewed this week including: The Boondocks: S1 (Uncensored) - another [adult swim] success story whose controversial beginnings as a comic strip actually helped the animated series gain popularity and critical acclaim; Dog Whisperer: S1 - a strange, yet endearing, show about dog behaviorist and best-selling author Cesar Millan and his mission to "rehabilitate" some hard-to-manage canines; Sgt. Bilko: Phil Silvers Show - 50th Anniversary Edition - a hilarious show that helped paved the way for countless sitcoms of its kind and, unfortunately, became a victim of its own success; Night Stalker: Complete Series - the recent television remake of the cult classic 1972 series that might not live up to its predecessors greatness but still provides some quality entertainment; Jeff Dunham: Arguing With Myself - the clever ventriloquist's Comedy Central special already makes it to DVD with some interesting special features; Joey: S1 - the Friends spin-off that failed to find an audience during its television run hopes to get a few laughs this time around. New Movie Reviews: X-Men: The Last Stand, An Inconvenient Truth, and District B13
Aside from one highly-anticipated film, this is a pretty slow week for theatrical releases. Brett Ratner's big release, however, is interesting enough to warrant three separate reviews from the DVD Talk review staff. Brian Orndorf, Jamie S. Rich, and Eric D. Snider each tackle the film with their own perspective, but they all ultimately come away with the same conclusion: X-Men: The Last Stand is definitely worth checking out. Jamie's review looks at the film through the eyes of a comic book devotee while Brian's review takes more of your typical moviegoer's approach, and Eric's review goes the standard film critic route. Each review, however, provides some very good insight into what works (and what doesn't) in X-Men: The Last Stand. Not to be overshadowed, two films debut in limited release this weekend. An Inconvenient Truth is a clever documentary bringing to light Al Gore's campaign to make global warming a recognized problem, and District B13 is the the latest exciting entry from producer/writer Luc Besson, who is clearly determined to prove that the French make the best action films. Be sure to catch reviews of other recent Theatrical Films: Over The Hedge, The Da Vinci Code, Mission: Impossible III, and Poseidon. As always, we invite you to share your thoughts on films in theaters in our Movie Talk Forum Area.
