This Week's Notable DVD: Mission - Impossible III
An uneven week for notable DVDs with almost no studio willing to compete with Mission - Impossible III [Reviews: DVD - HD DVD - Blu-Ray]. Other notable DVDs out this week include: BBC Atlas of the Natural World: Western Hemisphere and Antarctica [Review], C.S.I. Miami: S4 [Review], Kids in the Hall: S5, Kissology, Vol. 1, Rivers and Tides: SE [Review] and The Tarzan Collection 2. Anime Talk: The Guyver, Tactics, Speed Racer and Tenchi
Anime Talk has a look at some great, and not so great, anime DVDs this week. The second volume of Tactics doesn't suffer from the sophomore slump that afflicts many anime series. This show about an exorcist and the tasks that he takes on is unique and has a lot of personality. Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 2nd Gig comes to an exciting conclusion and was one of the better series released in 2006. Speed Racer finally wraps up with the final eight episodes, three and a half years after the release of the first volume. In addition to our usual installments of Holly's Anime Bargains and the upcoming releases there's an early look at a character that will be familiar to many old-time anime fans: The Guyver. ADV is releasing a new series of biobooster goodness and it promises to be intense, violent and a lot of fun. Be sure to check out our earlier columns for reviews of the complete Excel Saga, Ninja Nonsense, and Fullmetal Alchemist - The Conqueror of Shamballa.

New Movie Reviews: Flags of our Fathers, Prestige, and Marie Antoinette
The legendary Clint Eastwood steps behind the camera to direct another Paul Haggis script with Flags of our Fathers. Eastwood tells the story of how Joe Rosenthal's iconic photograph, "Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima," turned a few soldiers into instant war heroes and, subsequently, turned their lives upside down. More a personal character story than a all-out war film, Flags of our Fathers opens wide this weekend. Also in theaters this week is The Prestige - Christopher Nolan's latest film sports a stellar cast (Christian Bale, Hugh Jackman, and Scarlet Johansson) and tells the tale of two magicians who become rivals after being outed as frauds; Marie Antoinette - Kirsten Dunst stars as the titular character in Oscar®-winner Sofia Coppola's follow-up to the fantastic Lost in Translation; and Running with Scissors - Ryan Murphy's adaptation of the bestselling Augusten Burroughs memoir might have an excellent cast, but the advance buzz has not been kind to the film. Be sure to catch reviews of other recent Theatrical Films: Shortbus, Sweet Land, A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints, Flicka, The Grudge 2, Man of the Year, Infamous, Little Children, Alex Rider: Operation Stormbreaker, The Departed, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning, Employee of the Month, Jesus Camp. As always, we invite you to share your thoughts on films in theaters in our Movie Talk Forum Area.

New Movie Reviews: Grudge 2, Man of the Year, and Infamous
Takashi Shimizu is in the director's chair, yet again, for this remake of a sequel of a remake (confused?) called The Grudge 2. After The Grudge became a surprise hit in the states a sequel was obviously in the cards and, this time, Amber Tamblyn's along for the scares as The Grudge 2 opens wide this weekend. Also in theaters this week is Man of the Year - Robin Williams hams it up as late-night political talk show host Tom Dobbs who decides to run for president (problem is, he never expected to win); Infamous - Douglas McGrath's painstakingly researched film about Truman Capote that will, unfortunately, forever live in the shadow of the award-winning Capote; and Little Children - this adaptation of Tom Perotta's best selling novel is Todd Field's long-awaited follow-up to his 2001 indie hit In the Bedroom. Be sure to catch reviews of other recent Theatrical Films: Alex Rider: Operation Stormbreaker, The Departed, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning, Employee of the Month, Jesus Camp, Going to Pieces: The Rise and Fall of the Slasher Film, The Guardian, School for Scoundrels, Open Season, Revolver, The Queen, The Last King of Scotland, Jackass: Number Two, All the King's Men, Flyboys, The Science of Sleep. 2006 Bend Film Festival Preview
It's an unfortunate reality - many great film festivals have become launching grounds for big studio pictures trying to build indie cred, get pre-oscar buzz or snag that olive leaf festival seal for the DVD box. New voices and struggling filmmakers often get bumped from festival lineups in favor of studio films unspooling just prior to their national debut in theaters. BendFilm shatters this all to common mold with a fiercely independent festival (set in the picturesque resort town of Bend,Oregon) dedicated to great truly independent films and the filmmakers who make them. Last year BendFilm was the launch pad for The Puffy Chair and The Real Dirt on Farmer John. This year we have a preview of six of the films playing at the BendFilm fest including: Pirate Radio, USA, Dance Party, USA, Chalk, 10 Questions for the Dalai Lama, Trout Grass and Eve and The Firehorse. At least one the six films will undoubtedly find its wings and get greater attention after the fest. Read our complete festival preview of BendFilm 2006.

New Movie Reviews: Departed, Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning, and Employee of the Month
Martin Scorsese tackles the 2002 Hong Kong cult hit, Infernal Affairs, with his own version of the violent morality tale called The Departed. With a stellar cast consisting of Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, and Jack Nicholson (just to name a few), The Departed seems poised to be a surefire hit for the master director and a film you definitely don't want to miss. Also in theaters this week is The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning - Jonathan Liebesman tries to tell the origin story of one of the horror genre's most legendary icons while R. Lee Ermey chews up the scenery, once again, as Sheriff Hoyt; Employee of the Month - Someone must have forgotten how bad Jessica Simpson was in The Dukes of Hazzard and gave her a fairly large role (alongside Dane Cook and Dax Shepard) in this lackluster comedy; and Jesus Camp - this documentary about a "summer camp in Devil's Lake, North Dakota where the kids can eat, sleep, and breathe Jesus, essentially preparing them for future warfare" is sure to cause controversy. Be sure to catch reviews of other recent Theatrical Films: Going to Pieces: The Rise and Fall of the Slasher Film, The Guardian, School for Scoundrels, Open Season, Revolver, The Queen, The Last King of Scotland, Jackass: Number Two, All the King's Men, Flyboys, The Science of Sleep, Fearless, Haven, The Motel, The Black Dahlia, The U.S. vs. John Lennon. Recent DVD Reviews include: The Ground Truth - a brutal, poignant reminder that those scores of U.S. soldiers fighting on our behalf are suffering, bearing wounds that will echo, like silent death, through future generations; Feast - Project Greenlight finally produces a movie more engaging than the show itself and after a short theatrical run it appears on DVD; Tickets - three big-time international directors: Ermanno Olmi, Abbas Kiarostami and Ken Loach come together to make a brilliant three part anthology that should not be missed; The Quiet Duel - an interesting failure, a mess of a movie, admirably offbeat, with many fine components; Dust Devil: The Final Cut - a visually astounding film on a five disc set that even surpasses the film itself.
