DVD Savant: When a Woman Ascends the Stairs and Green For Danger
This week the DVD Savant has a number of new reviews including: Green For Danger - The Saunders and Gilliat filmmaking team give us a cracking-good murder mystery set in a country hospital with V-1 buzz bombs raining down on their heads; When a Woman Ascends the Stairs - Mikio Naruse makes a drama about a woman in the working world that makes most American 'women's pictures' pale in comparison; A Lizard in a Woman's Skin - Florinda Bolkan has some problems "under her skin", alright, but I now know some dogs who would rather not be singing "Deep in the heart of me"; Sins of the Fleshapoids - Eccentric director Mike Kuchar comes out swinging with his camped-up, kooky futuristic underground epic (1965) about forbidden love among humanoids. Read all this and more in this week's DVD Savant.

New Movie Reviews: Number 23, Reno 911!: Miami, and Astronaut Farmer
Joel Schumacher follows up The Phantom of the Opera with a twisted little thriller called The Number 23 with Jim Carrey in the latest of his non-comedic roles. The mystery unravels as Carrey becomes obsessed with a book that's, apparently, based on his life. Virginia Madsen costars. Funny, I thought The Number 23 was the amount of dollar bills you'll shell out if you see this flick in New York City as it opens this weekend. Wink, wink... Also in theaters this week is Reno 911!: Miami - Comedy Central's hilarious series comes to the big screen in all its uncensored glory; The Astronaut Farmer - Billy Bob Thornton, Virginia Madsen, and Bruce Dern star in this film about an astronaut who decides to retire in order to save his family farm; and Amazing Grace - Michael Apted directs this interesting and admirable period drama. Be sure to catch reviews of other recent Theatrical Films: Ghost Rider, Bridge to Terabithia, Breach, Music and Lyrics, An Unreasonable Man, Daddy's Little Girls, Factory Girl, Hannibal Rising. As always, we invite you to share your thoughts on films in theaters in our Movie Talk Forum Area.

The Last of the Mohicans - the 1971 BBC production gets closer to the novel than any other version but suffers from some technical issues; Dick Van Dyke - In Rare Form - an absolute must for any fan of Dick Van Dyke. DVD Savant: A Man For All Seasons, Blume in Love and The Clock
This week the DVD Savant has a number of new reviews including: A Man for All Seasons - Fred Zinnemann's film of Robert Bolt's play holds up as a superior drama; Blume in Love - Paul Mazursky's look at an upscale divorce in swinging California is funny, sentimental and decidedly un-P.C.; Hercules and the Captive Women - Reg Park flexes his muscles and grins his way through a darn good sword 'n' sandal tale of the lost land of Atlantis; Here Comes Mr. Jordan - Robert Montgomery plays musical souls in perhaps the most winsome of the films blanc; The Clock - Vincente Minnelli scores a hit by experimenting in a minor key: Judy Garland and Robert Walker's 'ordinary' romance is a good stab at naturalism through the MGM fog of glamour. Read all this and more in this week's DVD Savant.

New Movie Reviews: Ghost Rider, Bridge to Terabithia, and Breach
It's a shame that Ghost Rider has gotten beaten up by nearly every critic in the country. Nicolas Cage has been trying to get this film finished and released for a few years now, but it looks as though all the time didn't exactly pay off. You, however, can judge for yourself as Ghost Rider burns its way into theaters this weekend. Also in theaters this week is Bridge to Terabithia - the endearing animated film about two new friends who find themselves deemed king and queen of a magical kingdom in the forest; Breach - Billy Ray follows up Shattered Glass with this FBI film sporting a stellar cast of Chris Cooper, Ryan Phillippe, and Dennis Haysbert; and Music and Lyrics - Ah...another romantic comedy starring Hugh Grant...ho hum. Be sure to catch reviews of other recent Theatrical Films: An Unreasonable Man, Daddy's Little Girls, Factory Girl, Hannibal Rising, Norbit, The Messengers, Because I Said So, Perfume: The Story of a Murderer. This Week's Notable DVDs: The Departed, Half Nelson and Marie Antoinette

Other notable DVDs out this week include: 13 Tzameti, Infernal Affairs Box Set, Mutual Appreciation [Review], The Quiet [Review], Us Vs John Lennon, Wild Camp
