Notable Releases: Jigsaw, The Witches, and Kameradschaft
Jigsaw (4K UHD) Several great movies and programs have come out recently, including a few that shouldn't be missed: Jigsaw (4K UHD) - precisely what you'd expect, another Saw film… if you're looking for the victims to be just as hateable and disposable, the mystery as convoluted as ever, and the traps as gruesome, you'll be satisfied; The Witches - a heady mix of arthouse style, horror movie tropes and quirky comedy, if this movie isn’t always entirely successful, it is always very interesting; and Kameradschaft: Criterion Collection - G.W. Pabst's film is a claustrophobic, gripping, and important film that has aged about as well as any film approaching its ninth decade of existence. New Reviews: Blade Runner 2049, The Lego Ninjago Movie, and Pom Poko
Blade Runner 2049 Check out the latest reviews that have been entered into the DVD Talk Review Database including: Blade Runner 2049 - while the visuals (and the soundtrack that accompanies them) are dazzling, this sequel/reboot to the 1982 cult classic doesn't really cover any new ground; The Lego Ninjago Movie - a film that has enough laughs and emotional gravitas to be a pleasant experience for the whole family; and Pom Poko: Collector's Edition - aone of most underrated Ghibli films to date, director Isao Takahata's movie is the least typical Studio Ghibli film in their back catalog. TV Reviews: Teen Titans, The Simpsons, and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend
Teen Titans: The Complete First Season Some great TV shows have made their way onto home video recently including: Teen Titans: The Complete First Season - a quality program that gels humor with action and suspense, all while fleshing out its characters in a way that makes them relatable to audiences of all ages; The Simpsons - The Eighteenth Season - though the show has been in steady creative decline for a number of years, nearly every episode still offers at least one big belly laugh, and some of the episodes in that set are quite funny throughout; and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend: The Complete Second Season - this season raises the stakes for Rebecca, introduces or expands roles for several fun characters, and takes the story in an enjoyable direction. Notable Releases: Matinee, The Sword and the Claw, and My Neighbors the Yamadas
Matinee Some pretty cool discs have made their way to store shelves over the past couple of weeks. Check out these new titles: Matinee - John Goodman shines in the lead and the supporting cast also does great work in this Joe Dante film is a love letter to late fifties/early sixties B-movies and the often times quirky characters that brought them to us; The Sword and the Claw - this disc includes a second film, The Brawl Busters, and both features are enjoyable on their own terms, incredible even, and nearly indescribable, a perfect double-bill for a Saturday night with a gaggle of receptive friends; and My Neighbors the Yamadas - a decidedly different adventure from Studio Ghibli, it is a light and enjoyable diversion that kids of all ages should enjoy. New Reviews: It, One Million B.C., and Battle of the Sexes
It Some cool discs have been reviewed over the past week. Check out these recent entries: It - Andy Muschietti's adaptation of Stephen King's book isn't perfect, but it is very good… the cast is solid, Pennywise is at times genuinely frightening and there's a lot of good character development to anchor the story quite nicely; One Million B.C. - an ambitious novelty film about cavemen and dinosaurs, packed to the gills with elaborate special effects… the movie is loads of fun; and Battle of the Sexes - a dramatic retelling of the cultural touchstone that was the 1973 tennis match between Billie Jean King and Bobby Rigg. TV Reviews: Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, The Executioner's Song, and the 2017 World Series Film
Crazy Ex-Girlfriend: The Complete First Season Interested in the latest TV on DVD reviews? DVD Talk has you covered! This week's notable entries include: Crazy Ex-Girlfriend: The Complete First Season - this show is certainly not going to be everyone's cup of tea, but if you're in the target audience (folks who dig dark musical comedy about the love lives of the mental ill) this show is going to scratch that itch so hard; The Executioner's Song - this made-for-TV film offers a capable but unsettling portrait of Gary Gilmore's infamous 1976 double murder and the execution he wished upon himself months later; and Major League Baseball: 2017 World Series Film - it's nice to revisit the Houston Astros' World Series win, and the film on the series dispenses with any frills and tells the story and allows the viewer to glean the effective narrative and emotional moments. Notable Releases: Whisper of the Heart, Judgment at Nuremberg, and Young Mr. Lincoln
Whisper of the Heart There are some new titles coming out that might make it worth a trip to the video store. Check out these recent releases: Whisper of the Heart - beautifully directed and animated this is one of the Studio Ghibli’s most down-to-Earth films but supremely effective through its portrayal of great characters unsure of their place in a realistic world; Judgment at Nuremberg - the best of Stanley Kramer’s films, this war crimes courtroom drama addresses such issues as global culpability for Hitler's rise to power, while drawing parallels to American judicial compromises during the early days of the Cold War in the name of political expediency; and Young Mr. Lincoln: Criterion Collection - far from John Ford's best film, it is still a very enjoyable production that can be appreciated on its own terms. New Reviews: Men in Black Trilogy, Kingsman 2: The Golden Circle, and Stay Hungry
Men in Black Trilogy: 20th Anniversary 4K Edition Our reviewers have been busy this week, filling the DVD Talk Review Database more great entries. Some new reviews of note include: Men in Black Trilogy: 20th Anniversary 4K Edition - the Men in Black Trilogy survives on the strength of its original film and the chemistry between lead actors Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith; Kingsman 2: The Golden Circle - a franchise that tries to get everything done in its second installment and for the most part falls short of it, but technically it's a peach and the making-of is worth a check out alone; and Stay Hungry - the kind of oddball, character-driven gem that could have only been made by Hollywood in the 1970s. Notable Releases: The Foreigner and Terminator 2
The Foreigner Another banner week for home video with the studios releasing some great films and boxed sets such as: The Foreigner - Jackie Chan and Pierce Brosnan give excellent performances in this action film, but the surprise of the film is how well-rounded it is – rather than relying on the acrobatics of Chan or the guile or good looks of Brosnan this movie wants to tell a story and the actors respect it and contribute what they can to it without relying on their established talents; and Terminator 2: Judgement Day 4K Ultra HD - this movie is a spectacle to behold even 25 years after the fact, but this 4K release, even with a lower MSRP than most catalog titles, has some problems that can’t be overlooked. New Reviews: Dunkirk, Jumanji, and The Apartment
Dunkirk This week the DVD Talk Review Database has some great new entries, including a few discs you may have overlooked. Recent reviews include: Dunkirk - Christopher Nolan's film is a suspenseful, well-structured examination of an important turning point in WWII history; told from three intertwining perspectives; Jumanji (4K) - this film possesses a timeless sort of craftsmanship within its suspense, magical properties, and humor that continues to hold up as the years go by; and The Apartment - an undisputed classic and one of the best films of the 1960s, perfectly balancing Billy Wilder's prowess in both drama and black comedy; it's aged exceptionally well, like just about every other film in his body of work.
