Cinema Gotham: Cop Land and other recent DVDs
Cop Land Cinema Gotham has been hard at work reviewing DVDs with a New York angle. First off, James Mangold's Cop Land finally gets a director's cut release, reversing the compromised theatrical version and giving audiences a new chance to appreciate the work of one of film history's strongest ensemble casts. Next, Ang Lee's The Wedding Banquet is a wonderfully rewarding indie classic that melds a culture clash storyline with queer cinema to create something subtle and emotionally complex. And finally, the art-scene oddity Downtown 81 was made over two decades ago but was only completed in the last few. This excellent film features a charming performance from the late artist Jean Michel Basquiat as well as tons of other downtown luminaries.

DVD Savant: The Leopard
This week The DVD Savant has reviews of The Godfather - Coppola's breakthrough epic returns as a separate release that seems identical to the pressing in the previous boxed set, Winsor McKay The Master Edition - this Canadian collection gathers all of McKay's existing animated shorts, Judex - French serial maker Louis Feuillade pioneers the caped superhero in this thrilling, charming tale of extortion, kidnapping, lifelong vendettas and fantastic rescues, Duel in the Sun - David O. Selznick's western opus looks better than ever but the soundtrack is weak this go-round, Morituri - Yul Brynner and Marlon Brando make excellent thriller leads in this tense and uncompromising WW2 spy tale on the high seas and The Leopard - The once-unseeable Visconti masterpiece becomes one of Criterion's finest achievements. Featuring two versions of the film and a third disc with excellent interview docs

Anime on DVD - We've Got it Covered
DVD Talk Reviewers Don Houston and John Sinnott have been hard at work covering the complete range of anime DVDs released this month including: Angelic Layer - A strong female lead character is at the center of this series which an enjoyable surprise event people who might not thin is their type of show. One guy forced to live with five women, sounds like paradise right? Not in Happy Lesson an excellent anime series which wraps up this month with it's final volume. The somewhat obscure Kino's Journey is an impressive series that will leave you wanting more. Filled with steam powered machine guns and giant flying battleships that never land, Last Exile takes place on a world quite like ours, yet vastly different, and now with 3 volumes on DVD it's a world you'll want to definitely check out !
