DVD Savant: Bela Lugosi, Hammer Horror and Harakiri
This week the DVD Savant has a number of new reviews including: The Bela Lugosi Collection - the 1930s strike back with a five-title set of Bela Lugosi Universal classics; Gates of Heaven - Errol Morris' breakthrough docu-essay is supposedly about pet cemeteries, but its scope seems to widen to take in a contemporary portrait of America as a land of loneliness and despair; Red Garters - this cockeyed musical western spoof uses stylized settings painted in bright colors; The Hammer Horror Series - Eight -- Count 'em, 8 -- hot Hammer titles in one incredibly affordable package; Whirlpool - Otto Preminger supposedly laid an egg with this overheated psychological melodrama about a megalomaniac quack, a vulnerable kleptomaniac and her proud-but-thoughtful psychiatrist husband; Harakiri - a superb Samurai classic makes us think we're watching the same-old slasher thrills, until a riveting story kicks in to put us at the edge of our seats; Devil in the Flesh - NoShame DVD finally lives up to its name with this red-hot sex film with a shaky political core. Read all this and more in this week's DVD Savant.

CineSchlock-O-Rama Schlockcast: Skinned Deep
One of the best (and weirdest) horror flicks of the year, Skinned Deep is a surrealist slasher that's both unique and deceptively familiar. This CineSchlock-O-Rama schlockcast explores the bizarro terror tale populated by a plate-flinging midget, a lovelorn mutant and a bunch of other freakified folks. Jason Scott Lee's holy hiney kicker returns in Dracula III: Legacy. New Jersey's "Teehee & A" sinema scene begets Hotties and Hotties 2: The Hot, The Bad and The Ugly. Plus, hear an exclusive clip from Make Love! The Bruce Campbell Way -- a six-disc audio version of the New York Times best-seller. Listen using our Online DVD Talk Radio Player or download the complete schlockcast (22 mins, 13 mb).

Emerging Cinema Master: Kim Ki-Duk
Korean director Kim Ki-duk has been making some of the most consistently interesting and controversial films to come out of the South Korean cinema scene in quite some time. With an incredible range running from his most recent poetic and near dialog less The Bow and 3-Iron to the unflinchingly violent Coast Guard, The Isle Kim Ki-Duk has shown that great film makers can't be neatly bundled into a single genre or style. His take on relationships, love, hate, and theology may not always gel with your own but there's no denying how powerful some of his films are, and as his filmography grows, so too do his directorial skills. DVD Talk writer Ian Jane had a chance to interview Kim Ki-duk via email, and the result is an insightful look into a director who is truly an emerging cinema master.

The Blue Room: A Big Change is Coming
This month, adult entertainment is about to change in a big way and The Blue Room has a look at the DVDs which are going to help make that change. Many of the major adult studios have mounted (excuse the pun) large scale and big budget productions in an effort to win accolades, but more importantly win new viewers to the genre. These new films include everything from a pirate's film shot on the same ship as Pirates of the Caribbean (called appropriately enough Pirates), a sexy vampire thriller - Dark Angels 2, an avant garde/David Lynch like film from Michael Ninn - Catherine and one of the most eagerly awaited big budget adult films - The New Devil In Miss Jones featuring the queen of 'crossover' Jenna Jameson. If you've never explored the world of adult entertainment or it's been a while since you 'checked one out' this is the month you won't want to miss The Blue Room.
