DVD Savant: King Kong, Newsfront and Crooked Hearts
This week the DVD Savant has a number of new reviews including: King Kong (2005 theatrical review) - Kong's back and Denham's got him! Peter Jackson's colossal, stupendous Skull Island remake is going to thrill audiences like no adventure before; Barbra Streisand The Television Specials - classic TV and a treasure for her fans, as a couple of these haven't been seen in over 40 years; Crooked Hearts - The Warren family earns a "D" for Dysfunctional: They're nice people but they celebrate failure and deny dark secrets that aren't going to go away; Newsfront - a stirring account of the newsreel business earned every Australian award they've got but is virtually unknown in the United States; Ride Beyond Vengeance - Sixties medium-budget westerns took a big dip in quality, and this Chuck Connors effort is a disaster in almost every department despite its name cast. Read all this and more in this week's DVD Savant.

This Week's Notable DVDs - King Kong Diaries, Sin City Recut and Long Way Round
A fantastic week for notable DVDs, including: King Kong - Peter Jackson's Production Diaries [Review] - a 3 1/2 hour supplement to the film in theaters [Theatrical Review], worth checking out AFTER you've seen Kong on the big screen; ; Frank Miller's Sin City: Recut, Extended and Unrated [Review] - a clear case where the follow-up release matches or outshines the original in every department, leaving nothing important behind in the process; Long Way Round [Review] - a fantastic series following Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman riding around the world on their motorcycles; The 40-Year-Old Virgin [Review] - vulgar down to the bone, but sugary sweet at the same time, The 40-Year-Old Virgin is one of the funniest and enjoyable movies to come out in a long time. Other notable DVDs out this week include: Airplane - Don't Call Me Shirley Edition [Review], The Producers: Deluxe Edition [Review] Saint Ralph [Review] and The Simpsons: S7. New DVD Reviews: Lady Snowblood, 2046, Bad News Bears and Dumbland
Now with over 14,100 DVD reviews in the DVD Talk Review Database, it's easy to overlook some of the great reviews. Recent DVD Reviews include: Lady Snowblood (Collector's Box) - two excellent films given fantastic treatment on DVD; Kraftwerk: Minimum Maximum - from its flawless technical attributes to its gorgeous combination of sound and vision, this is an actual in-concert masterpiece; The Bad News Bears - not a classic like the original, but still an enjoyable baseball movie; 2046 - Wong Kar Wai's latest film is a visual and auditory delight; David Lynch's Dumbland - in the world of David Lynch, the line between humor and horror is very thin indeed; The Exorcism of Emily Rose - an effectively creepy movie that does a great job of mixing up the unlikely pairing of demonic possession and court room drama; The Myth - stronger than the last few films that Jackie Chan made in Hollywood but it fizzles out towards the end. Remembering Richard Pryor - A Talk with Jennifer Pryor
The list of 'The Greatest' is a short one. Although there are a lot of fantastic actors, directors and entertainers - few are truly 'greats'. Richard Pryor was one of those rare 'greats'. Prior reveled in the highs and lows of life, he challenged conventions and blazed the trail for countless comedians, actors and writers to follow. Unflinching even in the face of a crippling disease, Prior never failed to inspire and entertain. One of the last works to celebrate his life was ironically called I Ain't Dead Yet, M*Therf@Ck%R. DVD Talk writer Danielle Henbest recently spoke with Jennifer Pryor (before Richard's passing) about this project and about Richard Pryor. We felt the best way to remember Richard was to celebrate his last work. So here's our interview.
