New Movie Reviews: Superman Returns
Look, up in the sky! It's a bird! It's a plane! Nope, it's just the highly anticipated and long-awaited return of the Man of Steel to the big screen. After decades of false starts and trashed ideas, Superman Returns finally makes its way back into the hearts of people everywhere, and early word is that Director Bryan Singer has hit an absolute home run with his latest "superhero masterpiece." Reviews have been solid all around for the return of Supes, with Brian Orndorf even calling Superman Returns "one of the greatest films of 2006." Kate Bosworth, Kevin Spacey, and newcomer Brandon Routh help Singer breath life back into a widely-loved superhero that most people thought was (at least cinematically) dead. Superman Returns isn't just a heartfelt love letter to Richard Donner's original classic, but it's also a fantastic film and the biggest movie event of the summer. So what are you waiting for? Put on your red cape and get to a theater! As always, we invite you to share your thoughts on films in theaters in our Movie Talk Forum Area.

TV on DVD Reviews: Doctor Who: S1, King of Queens: S5, and The Newsroom: S1
Some great TV on DVD releases reviewed this week including: Doctor Who: S1 - the revamped version of a sci-fi classic series finally comes to R1 DVD and is sure to create a whole new generation of fans; The King of Queens: S5 - Doug, Carrie, and Arthur are back for more laughs in the fifth season of this hilarious sitcom; The Newsroom: S1 - the thirteen initial episodes of this documentary-style Canadian series is full of the show's signature biting humor and scathing satire; The Wild Wild West: S1 - Robert Conrad is excellent in the lead role of this hybrid western that's as enjoyable today as it was forty years ago; Rising Damp: S2 - this British comedy really hit its stride during its far-superior second season with great character actor Leonard Rossiter leading the way; ALF: S3 - while the show may be a bit uneven in terms of quality, any child of the '80s will revel in seeing their favorite furry alien again on DVD. DVD Savant: Clark Gable - The Signature Collection
This week the DVD Savant has a number of new reviews including: Clark Gable: The Signature Collection - The King of the Movies in five entertaining pix from 1933 to 1953; San Francisco - This more elaborate release from the Clark Gable Signature Collection gets its own, separate review; Hercules & Mole Men vs. the Son of Hercules - It's not perfect, but Retromedia's copy of Hercules is a reasonable enhanced widescreen transfer that frequently flatters Mario Bava's cinematography; Dazed and Confused - Richard Linklater's sparkling comic ode to the lost kids of 1976 comes back in a grandiose Criterion boxed set; Hamsun - Jan Troell's biographical drama about a remarkable Norwegian; Rice People - A completely absorbing study of subsistence farming in Cambodia; Agent #1 - A rather disappointing wartime spy movie about a Polish secret agent messing with the Nazis' patience in Greece. Read all this and more in this week's DVD Savant.

New DVD Reviews: The Matador, Eight Below, and L.A. Story: 15th Anniversary Edition
Now with over 16,100 DVD reviews in the DVD Talk Review Database, it's easy to overlook some of the great reviews. Recent DVD Reviews include: The Matador - Pierce Brosnan has never been better than he is here, teaming up with Greg Kinnear to wipe away that 007 image; Eight Below - Paul Walker leads a team of snow dogs across the Antarctic in this family-friendly old-school wilderness adventure; L.A. Story: 15th Anniversary Edition - the cerebral comedy with a fantastic performance by Steve Martin when he was still a wild and crazy guy; Asylum - this horror-anthology from Amicus Productions is packed with some real old-fashioned thrills; Petulia - one of Richard Lester's enduring masterpiece's, with terrific performances from George C. Scott and Julie Christie; Singapore Sling - this bizarre, shocking, and intentionally repulsive film is, at heart, a noir gone terribly wrong.
