New Movie Reviews: Casino Royale, Fast Food Nation, and Happy Feet
Daniel Craig steps into the legendary shoes of 007 in the latest James Bond adventure Casino Royale. Can Craig live up to the legacy of Roger Moore, Sean Connery, and Pierce Brosnan who all played the superspy before him? You decide as Casino Royale opens wide this weekend. Also in theaters this week is Fast Food Nation - Richard Linklater's take on Eric Schlosser's 2001 best selling book about exposing the "dirty little secrets" of the fast food industry; Happy Feet - a well-intentioned but ultimately confusing film that is strictly for the kids; and For Your Consideration - Christopher Guest is back at it again, only this around it's not in the mockumentary format that's made him so well known. Be sure to catch reviews of other recent Theatrical Films: Bobby, Stranger than Fiction, Fur: An Imaginary Portrait of Diane Arbus, A Good Year, Harsh Times, Fuck, Copying Beethoven, Borat, Flushed Away, Dixie Chicks: Shut Up & Sing, Santa Clause 3, Saw III, Death of a President. TV on DVD Reviews: Da Ali G Show, Family Guy and CSI
A ton of notable TV on DVD releases reviewed this week including: Da Ali G Show: Da Compleet Seereez - before Borat there was Sacha Baron Cohen's hilarious HBO series, now completely packaged together with all twelve episodes from the first two seasons of the show; Little Britain: Season 3 - perhaps the swan song for one of the freshest and funniest sketch comedy shows in recent years; C.S.I. Crime Scene Investigation - The Complete Sixth Season - this season managed to keep pace with the excellent seasons that passed before, with some episodes that are among the show's all-time best; NCIS Naval Criminal Investigative Service - The Complete Second Season - the sophomore season is an actual improvement over the first; Gunsmoke - The Directors Collection - one of the most popular westerns and one of the very best straight dramas in television history; Family Guy, Vol. 4 - it's the fourth volume, but the sixth release for Seth MacFarlane's resurrected series, can it still measure up? DVD Savant: Gary Cooper, Godzilla Raids Again and South Pacific
This week the DVD Savant has a number of new reviews including: Gary Cooper The Signature Collection - Coop shines in five starring vehicles, two of which number among his most interesting work; South Pacific Collector's Edition - Rodgers & Hammerstein picked Joshua Logan to direct what has become the major Broadway musical adaptation with the best music and worst direction ever; Whoever Says the Truth Shall Die - This 1980 documentary accuses a coverup in the murder of poet / film director Pier Paolo Pasolini, and chronicles his turbulent life; Godzilla Raids Again - Classic Media assembles a classy package that bundles the Japanese original, the American recut and some good extras; Flower Drum Song - This pleasant but dated Rodgers and Hammerstein musical has famous songs and a delightful pan-Asian cast, but still comes off as something of a fossil; Forgotten Noir 3 - VCI and Kit Parker come back with a pair of lower-case noirs, Shadow Man and Shoot to Kill. Read all this and more in this week's DVD Savant.
