New Movie Reviews: Rocky Balboa, Good Shepherd, and Night at the Museum
Sly Stallone steps back into the ring as Rocky Balboa and hopes to knock out the competition over the long holiday. So strap on your gloves, run up those legendary steps, and go two-to-two with Rocky Balboa as it opens wide this weekend. Also in theaters this week is The Good Shepherd - Robert De Niro directs Matt Damon in this film about the history and evolution of the CIA; Night at the Museum - Ben Stiller's latest film has a lot of heart and potential, but ends up a bit misguided; and Letters from Iwo Jima - this second part of Clint Eastwood's WWII project (the first part being Flags of our Fathers) captures the U.S.-led invasion of Iwo Jima from the perspective of the Japanese soldiers. TV on DVD Reviews: MASH Collection, Gene Simmons Family Jewels and Dr. Who
A number of notable TV on DVD releases reviewed this week including: M*A*S*H - Martinis and Medicine Complete Collection - the entire legendary series along with the movie that inspired it in a collection that offers literally hundreds of hours of quality TV entertainment; Gene Simmons - Family Jewels - Season One - an interesting and sometimes very funny look at the man behind all that KISS make up; Doctor Who - The Mark of the Rani - Colin Baker is The Doctor in this jam packed DVD; Criss Angel: Mindfreak - The Complete Season Two - a quality magician at work, with a touch of theatrics; Roseanne - The Complete Sixth Season - a fun sitcom with very likable characters and engaging storylines that are always filled to the brim with awesome humor; The Christmas Shoes - a sweet and thoughtful TV movie that is about love and hope, loss and death. DVD Savant: Forbidden Hollywood Collection and Jackie Chan's Police Story
This week the DVD Savant has a number of new reviews including: Forbidden Hollywood Collection Volume One - Warners takes the plunge into the naughty, scandalous and pretty-darn wonderful realm called the pre-code era; Jackie Chan's Police Story - This special "Dragon Dynasty" edition presents Jackie's Hong Kong cop epic in the original Cantonese version, and supposedly uncut; Ecco - Something Weird is back with a 'Mondo' picture that can boast a substantial name recognition factor; Red Angel - Japanese firebrand director Yasuzo Masumura is back with another shocker, this one about a gruesome battlefront surgery in the Chinese campaign circa 1939. This Week's Notable DVDs: Little Miss Sunshine, Fearless and When the Levees Broke
A fantastic week for notable DVDs including: Little Miss Sunshine [Review] - the darling of last year's Sundance Film Fest makes it way onto DVD in THE not-to-be-missed comedy of the year...If you watch one comedy this year on DVD, make it this one; Jet Li's Fearless [Review - Interview] - Jet Li goes out with a bang in his last and one of his best kung-fu epics; When the Levees Broke [Review] - Spike Lee's passionate and moving look at the flooding in New Orleans might just be his finest work yet; Lady in the Water [Review] - M. Night Shyamalan's latest isn't perfect, but that shouldn't stop you from enjoying it; A Scanner Darkly [Review] - Richard Linklater improves his technique from Waking Life and transforms this Philip K. Anime Talk: Fullmetal Alchemist, Full Metal Panic and Broken Saints
Need a last minute gift for that otaku (obsessive anime fan) in your life? Well this week's Anime Talk takes a look at all the latest releases and helps steer you to the right choice. The Fullmetal Alchemist Special Edition will have fans drooling for some of the bonus content and you can't go wrong with the Full Metal Panic starter set for the second season. Though not strictly anime many fans of the genre would enjoy Broken Saints. It's our featured review this week and the set comes highly recommended. Originally a Flash animated web cartoon the story is much better than its meager origins would indicate and those who have the patience to watch the first few episodes will be rewarded with a great story.
