New Movie Reviews: Sicko, 1408, and Evan Almighty
Michael Moore's latest work of "informational entertainment," Sicko, is a brutal indictment of the American health care system. Take him for what you will, but you can't deny that Moore makes mostly mundane subjects incredibly interesting and this latest treatise will, no doubt, spark some controversy. Sicko gets out of the hospital and into theaters everywhere this weekend. Also in theaters this week is 1408 - John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson lead the way in this paranormal Stephen King adaptation that's already gotten the thumbs-up from the world-famous author; Evan Almighty - Steve Carell picks up where Jim Carrey left of in Bruce Almighty by starring in this (incredibly expensive) comedy; and A Mighty Heart - Michael Winterbottom directs Angelina Jolie in this heartbreaking tale about journalist Daniel Pearl. Be sure to catch reviews of other recent Theatrical Films: You Kill Me, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, Nancy Drew, Eagle vs. Shark, D.O.A.: Dead or Alive, The Golden Door, The Treatment, Ocean's Thirteen, Surf's Up, Hostel: Part II, Your Mommy Kills Animals, Disappearances, Knocked Up. As always, we invite you to share your thoughts on films in theaters in our Movie Talk Forum Area.

DVD Savant: Invasion of Astro-Monster and The Ghidorah, The Three-Headed Monster
The Sergio Leone Anthology This week the DVD Savant has a number of new reviews including: Invasion of Astro-Monster - Classic Media presents this juvenile monster romp in a fine package that encourages serious study; Twelve O'Clock High - The celebrated Gregory Peck WWII flying story gets a third release from Fox in its Cinema Classics Collection; Goodbye CP - Uncompromising Japanese director Kazuo Hara turns his unblinking camera on Yokota Hiroshi, an independent-minded cerebral palsy victim who prefers to hobble and drag himself around the streets of Tokyo rather than use a wheelchair; How to Eat Your Watermelon in White Company (and Enjoy It) - This new docu takes a good look at the colorful career of Melvin Van Peebles; Le petit lieutenant - Xavier Beauvois' engrossing policier shows the workings of the Paris homicide squad, and gives us an excellent drama in the bargain; Ghidorah, The Three-Headed Monster - Classic Media gives us both the Japanese original and the American recut & redub of this all-star monster rally; Alice, Sweet Alice- Alfred Sole's rather anti-Catholic slasher pic is really a vision of a dysfunctional family ripped up by sexual repression. Read all this and more in this week's DVD Savant.
