New Movie Reviews: Eastern Promises, Brave One, and Hunting Party
David Cronenberg is back in the director's chair and teaming up again with Viggo Mortensen for Eastern Promises. Naomi Watts joins them in this follow up to the excellent A History of Violence, and it's clear that Cronenberg is "completely in control of his askew vision," making this another memorable film in his oeuvre. Eastern Promises heads into theaters everywhere this weekend. Also in theaters this week is The Brave One - Jodie Foster returns to the big screen in this Neil Jordan revenge flick; The Hunting Party - Richard Shepard follows up his underrated The Matador with this thrilling film starring Richard Gere and Terrence Howard; Dragon Wars (D-War) - a horrid film they tried to hide from critics, but we saw it anyways; and Mr. Woodcock - Billy Bob Thornton leads the way in yet another throwaway comedy. Be sure to catch reviews of other recent Theatrical Films: Hatchet, Shoot 'Em Up, 3:10 to Yuma, The Brothers Solomon, In the Shadow of the Moon, Halloween, Death Sentence, The 11th Hour. As always, we invite you to share your thoughts on films in theaters in our Movie Talk Forum Area.

DVD Savant: The Restoration of Kiss Me Deadly, Troy Director's Cut and Deliverance
Kiss Me Deadly This week the DVD Savant has a number of new reviews including: The Boys and Girls Guide to Getting Down - A riotously funny and barely exaggerated farce documentary on the Cahuenga club scene, with generous helpings of raunch, wit and honest reportage; Deliverance - John Boorman one-ups Robert Aldrich with this tough minded tale of men in conflict in the wilderness; Gumby Essentials Vol. 1 - He's made of clay and he's not particularly funny, but after a childhood watching him Gumby is sort of built-in to the human consciousness; U-Carmen - A very interesting entertainment: Carmen transposed to South Africa and sung in the language Xhosa. It's quite effective, and the operatic singing and acting are excellent; Troy: Director's Cut - Wolfgang Petersen add half an hour to 2004's retelling of The Iliad, and the result is a much more pleasing epic. Also this week DVD Savant debuts his latest article The Restoration of Kiss Me Deadly - Savant puts an old topic to rest by writing up the full story. Read all this and more in this week's DVD Savant.

This Week's Notable DVDs: Film Crew, Invasion of the Body Snatchers and Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee
The Film Crew A strong week for notable DVDs including: Film Crew: Wild Women of Wongo [Review] - the most gut bustingly funny Film Crew release to date; Invasion of the Body Snatchers - Collector's Edition [Review] - one of the best remakes ever on an upgraded disc worth getting for the extras; Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee [Review] - while perhaps not 100% historically accurate, it has an overarching truth of spirit and heart that will speak deeply to many people; Face/Off [Review] - Slick, stylish and over-the-top, John Woo's Face/Off is one of the more memorable action films of the 1990s. Other notable DVDs out this week include: American Cannibal [Review], Avatar The Last Airbender 2, Bones: S2, The Graduate, Grey's Anatomy: S3 [Review], McHale's Navy: S2 [Review], Return of the Living Dead, The Starter Wife and Two and a Half Men: S1. New DVD Reviews: We Are Marshall, Back to School and Kissology II
Troy Director's Cut With over 20K DVD reviews in the DVD Talk Review Database, it's easy to overlook some of the great reviews. Recent DVD Reviews include: We Are Marshall - a lovingly crafted tribute to, not only the sport of football and the thrill of competition, but also the redemptive powers of the game and finding the will to go on in the face of overwhelming adversity; Back To School - Extra-Curricular Edition - Though it's not nearly as popular as Caddyshack, I'm willing to say that Back to School is a better overall Rodney Dangerfield film, and, at its peaks, just as funny, successfully blending Dangerfield's stage act into a good overall story; Kiss: Kissology Volume II 1978-1991 - this is a veritable treasure trove for Kiss fans. Other new DVDs recently reviewed include: Georgia Rule, L' Iceberg, Iraq in Fragments: 2-Disc Special Edition, The Legend of God's Gun and Resident Evil / Resident Evil: Apocalypse. Visit the DVD Talk Review Database for all the latest reviews including an entire section devoted to reviews of DVDs out this week including a the ability to Browse reviews by studio.
