TV on DVD: All Quiet On The Western Front, Welcome to Sweden, and Solty Rei
All Quiet On The Western Front More TV shows have made their way on to DVD, and DVD Talk has got them covered. Check out our reviews of the newest TV releases including: All Quiet On The Western Front - this TV miniseries adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque's classic antiwar novel features a fine performance from The Waltons star Richard Thomas as a German youth seduced by the call to defend his country; Welcome to Sweden: Season 1 - a welcome change for a network comedy and a charming effort from Greg Poehler (brother of Parks and Recreation start Amy Poehler); and Solty Rei: The Complete Series - a bit of a mixed bag, though the series does have a good premise and likable characters. DVD Savant: Storm Fear, Escape from East Berlin, and The Young Lions
Storm Fear This week the DVD Savant has a number of new reviews and articles including: Storm Fear - producer-actor-director Cornel Wilde cuts loose with a superior noir suspense drama about bandits snowbound in a high mountain cabin; Escape from East Berlin - ace director Robert Siodmak films the topical story of a major tunnel escape under the Berlin Wall -- only a couple of miles from where it happened, and just a few months after it happened; and The Young Lions - It's an entertaining, fascinating big budget turkey -- three top stars in interesting roles can't overcome a trendy, faux-profound script and some of the worst direction in any big-studio attraction of the 1950s. Read all this and more in this week's DVD Savant.

Check out these recent entries: The Monster that Challenged the World - there's a great deal to appreciate about this film, especially in a release that looks and sounds this great and boasts such a compelling audio commentary; Harry in Your Pocket - James Coburn stars in this rich, fascinating film that gets even better with multiple viewings; and Purgatorio: A Journey into the Heart of the Border - this movie takes subjects that are often explored in a journalistic form and turns them into allegorical symbols that point out the absurdity of man-made borders.
