Recent Notable Releases: Dirty Dancing, Buster Keaton, and Dr. Orloff's Monster
Another banner week for home video with the studios releasing some great films and boxed sets such as:
Dirty Dancing - the original Patrick Swayze starring flick is a classic and still makes hearts melt around the world day in, and day out… with this release you get an explosive amount of extras too, that are sure to keep you busy for hours on end; Buster Keaton: The General / Three Ages - with new 2K restorations, both films look and sound better than ever... add in a new commentary on the first feature as well as a host of older extras and you have a great release; and Dr. Orloff's Monster - Jess Franco's 1964 picture is a lot of fun. The movie has got plenty of atmosphere and some great visuals.

New Reviews: Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, The Black Society Trilogy, and Battleground
Some cool discs have been reviewed over the past week. Check out these recent entries:
Jack Reacher: Never Go Back - unfortunately, Tom Cruise seems to be going through the motions in this film and it feels like a sequel that was made more out of obligation than any palpable passion for the source; Takashi Miike's Black Society Trilogy - Arrow's Blu-ray release is a really nice upgrade over past DVD editions that these films have received in North America… the video transfers are quite good and the audio is as well, while the inclusion of interesting commentary tracks for each film and interviews with both the director and Show Aikawa are also well worth checking out; and Battleground - director William A. Wellman an Oscar-winning WWII film bucks convention and cliché, while offering a portrait of American soldiers during the Battle of the Bulge that is empathetic and believably lived-in. It's terrific.
