TV on DVD: South Park and Decoy
South Park: The Complete Twentieth Season Some great TV shows have made their way onto home video recently including: South Park: The Complete Twentieth Season - this season Trey Parker and Matt Stone's massively popular show tackles the danger of nostalgia head-on (not to mention internet trolling, the 2017 Presidential election, and more) while attempting to build on the experimental serialized format that worked so brilliantly last year; and Decoy - this one-season undercover cop show from 1957-58 is an unusual, even groundbreaking series of exceptional interest. Notable Releases: Running on Empty, Hell In The Pacific, and The Autopsy of Jane Doe
Running on Empty Some pretty cool discs have made their way to store shelves over the past couple of weeks. Check out these new titles: Running on Empty - an excellent drama from director Sidney Lumet and writer Naomi Foner that stars River Phoenix, the film intriguingly grapples with universal issues of family bonding but under conditions that are uniquely fascinating; Hell In The Pacific - featuring two powerhouse lead actors (Lee Marvin and Toshiro Mifune) and their surprisingly low-key performances, John Boorman's early career highlight plays perfectly well almost 50 years later thanks to its universal themes, limited dialogue, and memorable characters; and The Autopsy of Jane Doe - enthusiastic performances from the minimal cast help to create an effective supernatural drama sprinkled with chilling moments. New Reviews: They Live By Night, Juice, and Who'll Stop the Rain
They Live By Night: Criterion Collection Our reviewers have been busy this week, filling the DVD Talk Review Database more great entries. Some new reviews of note include: They Live By Night: Criterion Collection - Certainly a film ahead of its time, Nicholas Ray's movie is a prototypical "couple on the run" drama that would obviously influence future classics; Juice (25th Anniversary Edition) - notable for hosting rapper Tupac Shakur's acting debut, Ernest R. Dickerson's film remains entertaining and relevant ; and Who'll Stop the Rain - Nick Nolte and Tuesday Weld are excellent in this adaptation of Robert Stone's novel.
